Expansion Breaks Ground at Sutter Santa Rosa Hospital

SANTA ROSA, Calif.—Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital is adding 40 private room beds as well as emergency treatment areas and surgical suites as part of an expansion and renovation project.
The hospital, located on a 25-acre lot adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, currently has 84 beds and a full patient wing. The expansion aims to enhance the hospital’s services as the Santa Rosa area, located an hour north of San Francisco, continues to grow in population.
Design and architecture firm Stantec is taking point on the $158 million project, which will be adding 67,000 square feet of space to host multiple disciplines and specialties.
The hospital first opened in 2014, and the expansion represents the second phase of its overall construction. The second phase of construction entails renovating nearly 11,000 square feet of the existing hospital space so that 24 emergency examination rooms can be included in the overall design. Furthermore, a three-story wing will be added to the east side of the hospital encompassing 40 private-room beds, an endoscopy unit and two operating rooms.
“We have a long history of providing quality, innovative care to our community,” Michael Purvis, CEO of Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital, said in a statement. “This expansion project will enhance our ability to provide coordinated healthcare and help us meet the growing needs of Sonoma County patients for years to come.”
The healthcare facility has photovoltaic panels as part of a commitment to energy efficiency and utilizing as much natural lighting as possible.
Stantec’s work for the expansion includes not only the structure and architecture itself, but also work on the interior of the building and meticulous planning of the facility’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
“It is a privilege to collaborate with one of the nation’s leading not-for-profit healthcare providers on the design and construction of this critical project,” Justin Wise, Stantec’s Sacramento-based healthcare architect of record for the project, said in a statement. “Expanding a healthcare facility just five years after the initial opening indicates the tremendous need in the community. We are excited to see the project come to life.”
Stantec’s collaborators include general contractor HerreroBoldt. The firms’ work on the Santa Rosa hospital is termed an integrated project delivery (IPD), wherein many parties come together on a design project for a collaborative execution.
The Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital expansion is anticipated to see its first patients in 2022.
