TYLER, Texas—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has completed construction of the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute in Tyler. A Cottonwood Development project, the 85,000-square-foot research facility is located on the CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances – Tyler campus and will now provide outpatient care to surrounding communities. To celebrate the completion, CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances held a ribbon cutting & blessing ceremony for their tenant spaces, attended by CHRISTUS® leadership, local, state, and federal officials, and clergy members. McCarthy broke ground on the project in May 2021.

The Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute consists of specialized areas for Texas Oncology, Tyler’s largest oncology provider, including 34,500 square feet of clinic space for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology services. Nearly 3,000 square feet is dedicated to research facilities, including three linear accelerators for radiation therapy, 52 chemotherapy infusion stations – with six allotted to research – and four private rooms. The facility also contains a pharmacy and lab services, as well as a patient exercise area.

CHRISTUS® Health features a 7,500-square-foot advanced imaging center with 3T MRI, PET/CT, CT, X-Ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and more. An additional 10,000 square feet of clinic space supports the surgical oncology programs of Louise Herrington Cancer Center, an inpatient facility located within The Bradley-Thompson Tower on the CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances – Tyler campus, providing advanced, inpatient care for complex cancer patients.

McCarthy’s work included a 620-car six-story parking garage.

“We’re thrilled to have completed such a meaningful project that will bring life-changing care to the community,” said Martin Montgomery, project superintendent for McCarthy. “This was a challenging project in multiple ways. Between the linear accelerators, multiple pieces of advanced imaging equipment from multiple vendors, and coordinating the requirements of two different healthcare providers that need to work together seamlessly to provide top-notch care, we’re excited to celebrate the opening of this facility.”

McCarthy self-performed earthwork for the Cancer Center and installed all underground MEP components for the tenant spaces ahead of schedule and before the final design was completed, despite ongoing supply chain and labor shortage challenges. This allowed McCarthy, who also self-performed concrete for the Cancer Center and the Linear Accelerator Vaults, to pour the slabs-on-grade on schedule. McCarthy had two mass concrete placements in August 2021, totaling over 2,200 CY of concrete for the Linear Accelerator vaults, which feature 6-foot-thick walls and a 6-foot-thick lid, constructed of high-density concrete. Adhering to mass concrete principles, this required the use of liquid nitrogen in the concrete mix. These vault walls were poured monolithically in a continuous pour in order not to have any joints for radiation to leak through. Faced with a construction timeline amidst soaring Texas summer temperatures, McCarthy replaced all the water in the concrete mixers with ice to bring the temperature of the concrete down below 75 degrees at point of placement.

McCarthy’s extensive portfolio of health care projects makes it ideally suited to take on health care projects of any size or complexity. In addition to the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, some of McCarthy’s health care projects include the Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion in Houston, the Children’s Health Plano Campus, Specialty Center II, and the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Replacement at Fort Hood, Texas by Balfour Beatty | McCarthy joint venture.

BEAUMONT, Texas—Texas Oncology has broken ground on a new 32,000-square-foot cancer care center that will enhance the level of cancer care available to patients in Southeast Texas. Located on the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth hospital campus, the new comprehensive cancer center will provide medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology, chemotherapy, genetic counseling, and lab services, as well as provide clinical trials. Radiation services will be provided in collaboration with CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth.

“Texas Oncology has a longstanding commitment to caring for cancer patients in Southeast Texas, as it was among the first to provide oncology services in Beaumont more than 30 years ago,” said Scott A. McKenney, M.D., FACP, medical director and medical oncologist and hematologist at Texas Oncology–Beaumont. “With the new center, we will be able to increase access to leading edge cancer care, allowing patients to receive high-quality care with minimal disruption to their lives.”

The new cancer center is a significant expansion for Texas Oncology–Beaumont, doubling the number of infusion chairs available to patients. The center also will feature the newest generation Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerator for radiation treatment. An on-site medically integrated pharmacy, fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Healthcare, will provide convenient, customized service in filling prescriptions and assisting patients with managing medications, such as immunotherapy.

“As a community-based cancer care provider, we want our patients in Beaumont—and everywhere in Texas—to have access to cancer care provided in modern facilities designed to enhance the overall patient experience,” said Steven Paulson, M.D., president and chairman of the board for Texas Oncology. “We are committed to investing in our facilities in the communities we serve to better meet the growing need for cancer care.”

President and chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth, Paul Trevino, said, “Unfortunately, a cancer diagnosis is the reality of just too many. It’s because of that great need that we are dedicated to caring for patients where they live, without the need for unnecessary travel, so they have the critical support of loved ones nearby throughout the course of their treatment. Through our collaboration with Texas Oncology, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth can continue to offer high quality, compassionate care to our community and effectively meet the increasing need for cancer care as the ministry grows.”

The new cancer center, located at 3010 Harrison Avenue, is being developed by Cottonwood Development, and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. serves as the general contractor. The new center will open in the spring of 2023.

TYLER, Texas—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has hit an important milestone in the construction of the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute in Tyler. McCarthy, the general contractor on the project, and its trade partners celebrated “topping out” in February. A Cottonwood Development project, the 85,000-square-foot research facility is located on the CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler campus and will provide outpatient care to surrounding communities. McCarthy broke ground on the project in May 2021 and is expected to complete construction in September of this year.

The Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute will consist of specialized areas for Texas Oncology, Tyler’s largest oncology provider, including 30,000 square feet of clinic space for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology services, and nearly 3,000 square feet dedicated to research. These areas will also contain three linear accelerators for radiation therapy, 52 chemotherapy infusion stations – including six allotted to research – and four private rooms as well as pharmacy and lab services and a patient exercise area.

Within the Institute, CHRISTUS Health will have a 7,500-square-foot advanced imaging center with 3T MRI, PET/CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and more. An additional 10,000 square feet of clinic space will be used to support the surgical oncology programs of Louise Herrington Cancer Center, an inpatient facility located within CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler, providing advanced, inpatient care for complex cancer patients. The project includes a 620-car parking garage.

“We’re actively involving the design team and a physicist in our MEP coordination efforts,” said Tim Campbell, senior project manager for McCarthy. “The linear accelerators and imaging equipment have all required MEP infrastructure coordinated with the requirements of the shielding systems and owner furnished imaging systems. This has been a uniquely challenging project, and we’re excited to celebrate this milestone as we move towards completion.”

McCarthy self-performed earthwork for the Cancer Center and installed all underground MEP components for the tenant spaces ahead of schedule. This allowed McCarthy, which is also self-performing concrete for the Cancer Center as well as the Linear Accelerator Vaults, to pour the slabs-on-grade on schedule without having to go back to remove concrete for underground infrastructure. McCarthy had two mass concrete placements in August, totaling over 2,200 CY of concrete for the Linear Accelerator vaults. These are concrete vaults with 6-foot-thick walls and a 6-foot-thick lid, constructed of high-density concrete. Adhering to mass concrete principles, this required the use of liquid nitrogen in the concrete mix. These vault walls were poured monolithically in a continuous pour in order not to have any joints for radiation to leak through. Challenged with soaring Texas summer temperatures, McCarthy replaced all the water in the concrete mixers with ice to bring the temperature of the concrete down below 75 degrees at point of placement.

In addition to the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, some of McCarthy’s health care projects include the recently-completed Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion in Houston, the Children’s Health Plano Campus, Specialty Center II, and the Carl R. TYLER, Texas—McCarthy Building Companies broke ground in May on the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, an innovative new cancer center in Tyler. A Cottonwood Development project, the 85,000-square-foot facility center is located on the CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler campus and will provide outpatient care to the region. Harris Craig Architects is the architect for the overall building design, and Corgan is the architect for the finish out.

The Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute will consist of specialized areas for Tyler’s largest Oncology provider, including 30,000 square feet of clinic space for medical oncology, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology services, and nearly 3,000 square feet dedicated to research. These areas will also contain three linear accelerators for radiation therapy, 52 chemotherapy infusion stations – including six allotted to research – and four private rooms as well as pharmacy and lab services and an exercise area for patients. Within the institute, CHRISTUS Health will house a 7,500-square-foot advanced imaging center with 3T MRI, PET/CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and more. There will be an additional 10,000 square feet of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic space in the new institute to support the surgical oncology programs of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louise Herrington Cancer Center, an inpatient facility located within CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler, providing advanced, inpatient care for complex cancer patients. The project also consists of a 762-car parking garage.

McCarthy will self-perform earthwork and concrete for the Cancer Institute, including concrete for the three Linear Accelerator Vaults. These high-density concrete vaults, used for external beam radiation treatments that deliver high-energy beams of accelerated electrons to target tumors, feature 8-foot-thick walls and a 6-foot-thick lid. The vault walls will be poured monolithically in a continuous pour in order to avoid using any joints that radiation could leak through. The vaults are above ground, attached to the cancer center, and are accessed from inside the building through a heavy lead-lined steel door.

“We’re pleased to be able to continue our relationship with CHRISTUS Health and help them bring a world-class cancer center to northeast Texas,” said Tim Campbell, senior project manager for McCarthy. “This project requires complex, unique solutions to ensure we construct a space that is safe for all patients and caregivers.”

McCarthy’s extensive portfolio of health care projects makes it ideally suited to take on health care projects of any size or complexity. In addition to the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, some of McCarthy’s health care projects include the recently-completed Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital- Tyler expansion, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion in Houston, the Children’s Health Plano Campus, Specialty Center II, and the Carl R.
