BUCKEYE, Ariz.—Hammes, a national real estate consulting, development, investment and management firm, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June to celebrate the opening of the new Buckeye Medical Plaza at 865 South Watson Road in Buckeye, Arizona. Located in the fast-growing West Valley, the new multi-tenant, 48,000-square-foot medical office building offers a convenient location for healthcare providers and patients.

Hammes began construction in the summer of 2023 and completed the Buckeye Medical Plaza in April 2024. Upon opening, eight tenants will be practicing out of the new facility, providing a complementary range of healthcare services, including primary care, lab, physical therapy, women’s care, pediatric Autism, podiatry, oral surgery, and dental.

Eric Orsborn, Buckeye Mayor, attended the ribbon-cutting event where he commented on the importance of bringing additional healthcare providers and services to the city. “The Buckeye Medical Plaza fulfills the City Council’s commitment to our community, but most importantly, it is a win for our residents. RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Designed by interdisciplinary firm, HGA, and delivered through a design-build partnership with Turner Construction Company, the new Student Health and Counseling Center at the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) is now providing a holistic approach to wellness for students across the University’s campus. Medical, mental health and wellbeing services are integrated throughout the comprehensive two-story, 39,450-square-foot center that includes a primary care clinic, women’s health services, laboratory services, a pharmacy, counseling offices, and a conference center. The University celebrated the state-of-the-art facility’s opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) has been carefully situated in the northern residential district of the campus, convenient for student access. It replaces the University’s former Student Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services, which were located in aging 1960’s era buildings south of the new site. Both departments, Student Health and Counseling and Psychological Services are the largest operators in the new Center, which now includes more than double the number of exam rooms and offers a wide array of upgraded spaces to support student health within walking distance from the residence halls.

The new facility offers additional health services in a single location for the first time to complete a seamless wellness experience, including Case Management Services and the Student Well-being, Intervention, and Follow-up Team (SWIFT) that handles crisis response. The Well—UC Riverside’s health promotion and education department—and Basic Needs, which assists students with essential needs and provides for students with food insecurity issues, also have satellite spaces at the new facility. The increased space for medical services results in increased appointment availability for more efficient treatment. To support this, the space also includes a significant technology upgrade, which is being accompanied by a redesigned website where students can easily manage their healthcare.

HGA’s design of the Student Health and Counseling Center relied on evidence-based practices to ensure all departments can work together synergistically within the new healthcare environment. Laboratory services were relocated to be directly adjacent to the clinics for improved connectivity and communication between the clinicians and lab staff and to ensure patients could provide their specimen collection as part of their appointments.

The design also focused on the student experience, providing a modern healing atmosphere for those who are ill and a welcoming space to promote ongoing services and preventative care for students campus wide. Soothing, biophilic design elements contribute to the overall environment with large windows that allow natural light and take advantage of views of the Box Springs Mountains to the east and the Wellness Court and green belt to the south. A custom wood art wall design accents the main lobby reception area and the counseling center features specialty wood ceilings. A spectrum of soft blue, yellow and green pastel colors decorate walls in the first and second floor lobbies, a nod to the calming effects of nature.

The building’s multiple entries provide enhanced accessibility for students, staff, and visitors that arrive at the Center. The main entrance, located on the front of the facility and highly visible from the main thoroughfare of West Linden Street, provides vehicular access and drop-offs. A second entry, located off of the central courtyard, provides easy access for students walking to the Center from the dining and residence halls to the south. A third key entry is provided on the west side of the building, allowing for discreet ambulance access to the facility, for students requiring transport to a local hospital.

The design of the new center achieves the University’s sustainability goals anticipating a LEED Silver certification while addressing environmental concerns through embodied carbon reduction; human health concerns through nutrition programs, improved air quality, acoustics, and the incorporation of biophilic design strategies.

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis.—On June 4, SSM Health celebrated a ceremonial groundbreaking for its new outpatient center in Sun Prairie. The approximately 90,000-square-foot facility will allow the health care provider to better meet the needs of the growing Madison metro.

“Sun Prairie is a thriving city that attracts people from a number of surrounding communities. We are invested in growing with it,” says Sue Anderson, Regional President of SSM Health in Wisconsin. “This new outpatient center will alleviate some of the growing constraints we face at our SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison campus and allow us to open access for more timely care when and where our patients need it.”

The project is more than just a new building, it is a long-standing commitment to Sun Prairie and the surrounding communities, bringing additional health care access, as well as stable and secure employment to the area.

“This is a great day for Sun Prairie. What you are undertaking today will benefit our community for years to come.  We appreciate the confidence you have in our community as demonstrated by this new facility,” said Paul Esser, Mayor of the City of Sun Prairie. “Thank you for choosing Sun Prairie for this expansion.”

While the core vision of the Sun Prairie Outpatient Center is to expand convenient access to key surgical and eye care services for patients, the project also puts sustainability at the forefront. Architectural partners Kahler Slater include leading edge environmentally focused features, while also honoring the legacy of the site.

“Kahler Slater partnered with SSM Health to design a building with future resilience, a focus on staff wellbeing and patient experience leveraging WELL principles and an operationally efficient care team model,” says Melinda Pogwizd, AIA, Kahler Slater Project Designer. “The project site includes a robust solar array, a half-mile walking path and 100+ year old legacy trees were maintained in the planning. We are proud to work with a client that has invested wholeheartedly in exceptional patient care and has sustainability top of mind.”

Long-time construction partners J.H. Findorff & Son, Inc., were selected as the project’s contractor. The new facility will build upon the success SSM Health and Findorff have seen on past projects like the SSM Health South Madison Campus project.

“We’re honored to continue our long-standing relationship with SSM Health on this exciting new project. Many of our team, including myself, are proud to call Sun Prairie home and look forward to enhancing our community and building a new resource for the people who need it,” notes Jeff Tubbs, Executive Vice President at J.H. Findorff & Son, Inc.

Opening in 2025, the Sun Prairie Outpatient Center will offer surgical orthopedics care, as well as comprehensive eye care services.

PHILADELPHIA—FCA, this year commemorating its 70th anniversary, is one of the oldest established design firms in continuous operation in Philadelphia. Originally a regional practice, FCA has grown over the past seven decades into a nationally recognized design firm, spearheading work on thousands of projects for clients across the United States and internationally.

Initially conceived with a focus on institutional and lab design, the firm has become a sought-after practice with an established reputation across such sectors as healthcare, medical equipment planning, workplace, higher education and design sectors. The milestone reflects the company’s steadfast dedication to embracing adaptability and collaboration as core principles in shaping the built environment.

Dovetailing with FCA’s strategic expansion into new markets, including the establishment of offices in New York City in 2007 and Orlando in 2019, the firm rebranded in 2022, refining its existing processes and identity while honoring the initials of the firm’s founders. Working diligently to expand its expertise, FCA plans to continue to strengthen and diversify its portfolio, with an existing suite of strong relationships forming the basis to pursue thoughtful growth and acquisition strategies over the next several years.

In 2023, FCA unveiled its renovated Philadelphia headquarters. The reimagined Philadelphia workplace holistically embodies the firm’s strategy in practice, serving as a springboard for future workplaces across the country while celebrating FCA’s established culture.

Further underscoring their emphasis on future-forward design thinking and solutions for the built environment, the team brought on a Sustainability Director and signed AIA’s 2030 Agreement, pledging to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

Looking ahead to the 75th and 100th anniversaries, this milestone stands as a testament to the organization’s enduring influence within the architecture and design industry. Moving forward, FCA has stated it will aim to keep pushing the boundaries of design, while upholding its guiding principles of People, Place, Planet, Process, and Prosperity.
