Scripps Memorial Hospital Breaks Ground on $130 Million Expansion
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Scripps Memorial Hospital broke ground on a six-story, $130 million office building. Part of Scripps Health’s $2 billion renovation plan, the John R. Anderson V. Medical Pavilion will house several medical specialists including cardiologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists and endocrinologists.
The six-story, 175,000-square-foot building, which is slated for completion in 2016, will also include four cardiac catheterization labs. The project was made possible by a $25 million donation from Eileen Anderson and John "Jack" R. Anderson IV.
"We felt this donation would be an appropriate way to pay tribute to our son John and give others the opportunity to benefit from the medical expertise that our family has trusted over the past three decades," John Anderson IV said in a statement. "John had a lot of things in common with Scripps. He was a great thinker, an innovator. He was always trying to make life better for somebody else."
The building is named after the couple’s son, John Anderson V, a navy veteran who died of melanoma 10 years ago.
"We are extremely grateful for the long-standing philanthropic support of the Anderson family, and this latest gift will create a lasting legacy for generations to come," said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health president and CEO, in a statement. "Scripps was founded through philanthropy and it’s the generosity of donors like the Andersons and others that has made us what we are today. And, it will be that generosity that will shape us into who we become in the future."
The new medical pavilion will open adjacent to another Scripps Health construction project — the seven-story Prebys Cardiovascular Institute. The 108-bed facility will open in 2015.
