CARTERSVILLE, Ga.—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has wrapped the 43,122-square-foot North Tower vertical expansion at Piedmont Cartersville in Bartow County northwest of Atlanta. The $24 million project broke ground in August 2022.

McCarthy added two floors to the existing three-story tower, which provide additional support space and general storage for the hospital staff on the new fourth floor. The fifth floor now houses 20 beds for short stay patients at the hospital. The project also included the renovation and 11,000-square-foot expansion of the existing Sterile Processing Department.

Additional project partners include TMPartners as the architect, I. C. Thomasson Associates as the mechanical engineer, Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates, Ltd. as the structural engineer and Meadows & Ohly as the program manager.

Piedmont Cartersville is among 23 hospitals affiliated with the Piedmont Healthcare system, headquartered in Atlanta. McCarthy was awarded the Piedmont Cartersville project in June 2022. Over the last five years, McCarthy has successfully executed multiple projects for the healthcare system’s Atlanta, Athens Regional, Cartersville, Columbus, Newton and Rockdale campuses. McCarthy was awarded the Piedmont Cartersville project in June 2022.

“The successful completion of this project reflects yet another rewarding partnership with Piedmont Healthcare and we take pride in our role contributing to the hospital system’s expansion efforts, aimed at improving patient care for Bartow County residents,” said Mark Cleverly, project director at McCarthy Building Companies. “There was a substantial effort from McCarthy to maintain hospital operations during construction, and we were successful in avoiding any significant impacts to patient-provider flow while delivering the project on time and within budget.”

McCarthy is one of the South’s leading healthcare builders, completing more than 60 healthcare projects in the southern region in the past five years.

CARTERSVILLE, Ga.—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has celebrated the topping out of the North Tower vertical expansion at Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center in Bartow County near Atlanta. The project broke ground in August 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2023.

Adding two floors to the existing three-story tower, the 43,122-square-foot vertical expansion will provide additional support space and general storage for hospital staff on the new fourth floor, while the fifth floor will house 20 beds for short stay patients at the hospital. The project also includes the renovation and expansion of the existing Sterile Processing Department which will feature 11,000 square feet of additional space.

Piedmont Cartersville is one of 22 hospitals in the Piedmont Healthcare system based out of Atlanta. Over the course of five years, McCarthy has completed over $50 million and 124,000-square-feet of projects for Piedmont Healthcare, including work for the healthcare system’s Piedmont Atlanta, Athens Regional, Columbus, Newton and Rockdale campuses. McCarthy was awarded the Piedmont Cartersville project in June 2022.

“This project marks another exciting partnership with Piedmont Healthcare, and we are proud to play a part in the hospital system’s growth as we work to enhance its ability to provide excellent healthcare services and additional comfort and care for patients in Bartow County,” said Mark Cleverly, project director at McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. “The complexity, scale and scope of the project required strategic solutions to bring the project from ground breaking to topping out, and we are pleased to have successfully reached this phase of the build out. We look forward to celebrating the completion of the expansion later this year.”

Located adjacent to the hospital’s surgical unit, the Sterile Processing Department still needed to be 100% functional throughout construction in order to minimize the level of disruption to this sensitive area, McCarthy worked closely with Piedmont Healthcare’s construction management team, the hospital’s C-suite and facilities management teams during the pre-construction phase to accommodate these needs. By utilizing a mobile sterilizing unit from Steris, McCarthy will be able to completely close off the department while keeping all sterilization operations functional, significantly reducing costs and the overall project timeline by several months.

According to recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), healthcare construction has surged as hospitals increasingly update and expand service wings, upgrade mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and add new treatments to better serve growing populations and provide the latest healthcare advances. Construction spending for healthcare facilities is projected to reach $45.8 billion in 2023, a 14% jump from 2022 activity.

McCarthy is one of the South’s leading healthcare builders, completing more than 60 healthcare projects in the southern region in the past five years. Additional project partners include TMPartners as the architect, I. C. Thomasson Associates as the mechanical engineer, Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates, Ltd. as the structural engineer and Meadows & Ohly as the program manager.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga.—Hammes Healthcare, a leading provider of consulting and project management services, has announced the completion of a 40-bed, two-story vertical expansion of the Emory Johns Creek Hospital in Johns Creek.

Hammes has been serving as Emory Healthcare’s project manager on this complex vertical expansion since 2019. DPR was the general contractor and TMPartners (Nashville) and Frandsen Architects (Atlanta) were the architects on the endeavor.

The vertical bed tower expansion added a fifth and sixth floor to the hospital’s existing patient tower. The sixth floor includes 40 medical/surgical patient beds and associated support spaces. The fifth floor is currently shelled space that will include hospitalists’ offices, an additional 13-bed build-out mirroring the sixth floor and storage space.

Also associated with the project is the renovation of the hospital’s intensive care unit and a new 640-car parking garage. This past summer marked the completion of the three-story vertical expansion of the attached medical office building. The interior buildout of the medical office building is still underway, likely to be completed at the end of the year.

“It has been a privilege to support Emory Healthcare on this unique and complex vertical expansion project,” said John Healy, Hammes Healthcare Senior Vice President. “We are excited to reach this significant milestone and look forward to successfully completing the remaining aspects of the project by year-end.”

Hammes Healthcare also served as Emory Healthcare’s project manager for the Emory Musculoskeletal Institute in Atlanta, which was completed last October.
