CHARLOTTEAlabama-based general contracting firm Brasfield & Gorrie announced that it has topped out the first phase of its new Pappas Properties medical office building in downtown Charlotte. Brasfield & Gorrie officials were on hand to celebrate the milestone along with project partners Atrium Health, Pappas and architecture and design firm the Beck Group at the site of the medical complex, located at Kenilworth Avenue and Harding Place in Charlotte’s Midtown district.

The structure is to be the first of two medical office buildings in the development, the company announced. Construction began in May, with the entire project slated for completion sometime in the third quarter of next year.

Brasfield & Gorrie is building the pair of medical office buildings and a nine-level parking deck for client Atrium Health. The first building entails 200,000 square feet of space on top of two levels of cast-in-place parking.

A new outpatient facility will offer healthcare services ranging from cardiac rehabilitation, state-of-the-art imaging rooms as well as other spaces for cardiovascular services. The five-story facility will be known as the “Atrium Health’s Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute – Kenilworth” location.

“We are grateful for our ongoing relationships with both Pappas Properties and Atrium Health,” Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Michael Byrd said in a statement. “This facility will increase healthcare accessibility in Charlotte in an area where residents can live, work and play.”

“Pappas Properties is honored to have partnered with Atrium in joining our vision for the future delivery of community healthcare, anchored within a multi-faceted mixed-use project,” added developer Pappas Properties CEO and founder Peter A. Pappas.

The building housing medical facilities itself will be joined with the precast parking deck, which offers spaces for 1,400-plus vehicles. The parking deck will be connected to the medical office buildings via a four-level pedestrian bridge,

“The Beck Group is very proud to be collaborating with Atrium and Pappas Properties on such a unique opportunity,” the Beck Group National Director of Healthcare Sean Wilson said in a statement. “This project is the first of many that will transform the way care is delivered in the city of Charlotte and our neighboring communities.”

“This campus will be further developed in phases and include additional medical, residential, hotel, and restaurant uses that will further amenitize the site,” Peter A. Pappas said in May, according to the Birmingham Business Journal.

Brasfield & Gorrie was founded in 1964 and now boasts 12 offices across the country. The company reported 2018 revenues of $3.3 billion.

JACKSON, Miss.—Brasfield & Gorrie, a general contracting firm, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center—both located in Jackson—together announced that they have topped out the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children expansion, located on the university’s main campus.

“The project will allow UMMC to care for many more patients,” Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Ed Hauser said in a statement regarding the topping out, which means that the building’s framework is now complete. “We are honored to play a role in expanding healthcare coverage for Mississippi families.”

The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children is being constructed next to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The children’s hospital will feature 355,303 square feet of medical space in a new seven-story tower. The new construction will host the Children’s Heart Center and will also offer a neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) with private rooms and pediatric intensive care rooms, surgical suites, imaging center designed for children and also an outpatient specialty clinic.

When completed, which is estimated to be in the fall of 2020, the new tower will be able to handle a complement of 30 percent to 40 percent more outpatient treatments than at present, as well as 40 percent more surgeries. Guy Giesecke, the CEO of Children’s of Mississippi—the organization that includes Batson Children’s Hospital and all UMMC pediatric care facilities—estimates that this addition will also increase twofold patient access to imaging services.

Brasfield & Gorrie is also building an adjacent five-level parking garage designed to hold 517 cars. Construction of the parking garage will likely conclude next summer, the firm estimates.

The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children is the largest construction project in the state of Mississippi, according to Brasfield & Gorrie CEO Jim Gorrie, who also noted during the topping out that over 90 percent of the construction work has so far been undertaken by local contractors.

Brasfield & Gorrie, which is managing the construction project, has also worked on other projects in the Magnolia State such as the new Westin Jackson and the mixed-use District at Eastover in downtown Jackson. Modern Healthcare ranked Brasfield & Gorrie the No. 1 contractor in healthcare construction in 2018 based on national revenue figures.

DALLAS — Medical City Dallas Hospital revealed major updates to its medical campus this year, with the completion of a vertical expansion project and renovations in May, followed by the groundbreaking of yet another vertical expansion project in fall 2016.

Serving as the general contractor, Birmingham, Ala.-based Brasfield & Gorrie teamed with architect Perkins+Will, with offices in Dallas, for both projects.

Brasfield & Gorrie has completed or is currently working on 24 projects at the Medical City Dallas Campus.

The recently completed expansion in the hospital’s Building E tower included a seven-story, 206,400-square-foot addition as well as a 65,200-square-foot interior renovation, which were completed in just 27 months. The construction team used prefabricated patient room headwalls and a prefabricated exterior curtain wall system in the vertical addition, which helped save time on the schedule. The patient room headwalls were prefabricated on site, while the curtain wall system was created off site and delivered to the site for installation.

“Our team worked closely with Medical City Dallas to execute the master plan expansion and renovation without compromising their ability to serve the Dallas community,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Senior Project Manager Chris Wall in a statement. “We were able to implement measures, ranging from prefabrication to self-performance, to expedite the schedule, saving time and money and allowing Medical City the option to further enhance its facilities.”

The vertical expansion of Building E includes an additional 60 patient rooms and 32 intensive-care unit rooms above the hospital’s existing emergency department, in addition to shell space that can be used for future growth. Interior renovations included upgrading the existing surgery, medical oncology, surgical oncology, stem cell research, emergency department and clinical decision unit spaces. It also included updating 13 operating rooms, which required phased scheduling so that at least four operating rooms were open at all times during construction.

Construction on the new five-story vertical expansion began this fall. It will transform the existing Tower D into a new Women’s Hospital and is scheduled for completion in spring 2018.
