Growing Millsboro Population Requires New Medical Facility
MILLSBORO, Del. — Construction on the 48,000-square-foot Delmarva Health Pavilion in Millsboro is currently on schedule for completion this summer, after breaking ground on Oct. 9.
The facility is an expansion of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), which has been a major player in the Sussex County hospital market since 1897. It is necessary in order to accommodate the Millboro’s growing population — which Thompson Reuters predicts should grow by 8.2 percent over the next five years. More than 100,000 people are within a 20-minute drive from the center of Millsboro, where the new pavilion will be conveniently located off Route 113 just north of the Route 20 intersection.
“The need for a wide range of health care services and chronic disease management is expected to significantly increase in the next half decade in Sussex County, and we’re honored to partner with the local community to provide those services now and well into the future,” said Dr. Peggy Naleppa, PRMC president and CEO, in a statement.
Salisbury, Md.-based Gillis & Gilkerson is serving as the general contractor on the project.
Anchoring the new facility will be a family medicine primary care practice of PRMC’s Peninsula Regional Medical Group. Dr. Nancy Squires and her team will relocate to Millsboro from their current location in Dagsboro. The practice will take up approximately 6,000 square feet of the second floor.
Although agreements on specific practices and types of services are still in the works, the first floor will host specialized and diagnostic services, ranging from orthopedic care and diagnostic imaging to specialties of cardiology, urology and allergies.
Once the facility is completed, the building should bring up to 100 new jobs to the area. “As a local area medical center developer, we are excited to be a part of this leading-edge, state-of-the-art, family medical facility,” said Palmer Gillis, partner at the construction company, in a statement. “The greater Millsboro economy will be positively impacted by this facility and high-quality health care will become more accessible for the community.”
