FUJAIRAH, United Arab Emirates—The new Sheikh Khalifa Central Hospital has opened in the UAE on the eastern edge of the emirate of Fujairah. The hospital comprises a 32-bed emergency department, three-story rehabilitation building and 11 specialized medical departments. In addition, the new medical facility will offer parking space for 700 vehicles as well.

Because the new medical facility has brought together a wide range of doctors and specialties under one room, an integrated, umbrella surveillance and security system was needed to service the hospital’s various areas. Accordingly, the Sheikh Khalifa Central Hospital outsourced the fashioning of a video security system to a firm called Siqura, which has offices in Dubai. Siqura worked with another contractor, TKH Security, to install the cameras for the security system.

In a news release about the hospital unveiling, Tariq Anwer, sales director for the Middle East & West Asia with Siqura, said that his firm worked to achieve the video security guidelines that are now required in Fujairah.

“The video surveillance component consists of around 700 different Siqura cameras, working with VDG Sense video management software and storage from TKH Security,” Anwer said. “The iProtect access control system, also from TKH Security, manages around 400 doors with card and pin authentication. [The] iProtect security management system is able to flawlessly fulfill the set of complex requirements demanded by this client.”

Anwer added that the Sheikh Khalifa Central Hospital was a particularly proud achievement for his firm given the challenge of multiple security systems’ being integrated under one roof. He said that all aspects of the system are managed by personnel on an upper floor of the hospital.

“Among others, some of the following features are implemented: managing visitors on-site and mustering system for emergency evacuation,” he said. “This is in addition to the integration option with third-party systems, for example baby-monitoring.”

The security system’s other features include active directory integration, tracing of visitors, emergency evacuation facilitation and ID card printing at a single user interface portal.

Both Siqura and TKH Security fall under the banner of TKH Group, a firm with over 5,500 employees around the world. The umbrella company says that it fashions innovative telecom and industrial building solutions for its various clients.

ABU DHABI, U.A.E.—Design firm Stantec has completed its work for client Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) on the new 3.2-million-square-foot Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. This concludes a 10-year construction and design process, and the SSMC replaces the former Al Mafraq Hospital, first opened in 1983, but which had reached operational capacity.

The SSMC is one of the 10 largest hospitals in the country, and its opening improves healthcare access for residents of Abu Dhabi. Stantec’s representatives say that it will also be one of the most advanced healthcare facilities in the United Arab Emirates.

Among the medical capabilities being offered at SSMC are an advanced burn treatment facility as well as specialty care such as thoracic and orthopedic surgery. The new hospital will have 732 beds across three wards. Collectively the three wards will be set up to handle post-surgical inpatient beds, maternal and child health beds, medical intensive care unit beds, cardiac ICU beds, surgical ICU beds, burn unit beds and neonatal ICU beds.

“SSMC was developed as part of SEHA’s vision to provide the best healthcare services in line with the directives of the Government of Abu Dhabi,” Mohammed Al Zaabi, chief of facilities at SEHA, said in a statement. “SEHA is a leading healthcare provider and SSMC is a significant addition to the services provided—adopting cutting-edge technologies and providing a high-class environment to both patients and users.”

The architectural layout of the SSMC features four towers on the campus. Additionally, certain areas have been specifically set up to offer patients and their families maximum privacy. The facility also offers 36 VIP suites and two presidential suites. A helipad and parking spaces for close to 2,000 vehicles are also part of the overall design.

Stantec’s design work on the SSMC entailed master planning, landscape and interior design and architectural services. Stantec also provided for the facility mechanical, electrical, structural and infrastructure engineering services, as well as acted as the construction administration oversight manager.

“The completion of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City is an important milestone for the UAE, helping the government meet important performance outcomes and open new avenues of care to residents near and far,” Kevin Christon, principal with Stantec, said in a statement. “It’s been an honor to continue our relationship with the governments of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, and we are excited to see this dynamic, forward-thinking project come to life.”

Al Zaabi added that SSMC will serve as the flagship facility for SEHA with its world-class healthcare services for patients who are both local and international. The initial staff will comprise 3,000 medical professionals. The SSMC sits just 12 miles from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Stantec’s other work in the Middle East region includes the King Faisal Specialist Hospital—Tertiary Care Pediatric Hospital in Saudi Arabia and the PET & Proton Therapy Center of Oman. Other work inside the UAE itself includes the Mafraq Dialysis Center and the Al Silaa Community Hospital.

ZEELAND, Mich. – The technology used to train astronauts and airline professionals is now available to health care professionals at the new Clinical Simulation Center in Washington, D.C. to educate health care professionals on how to heighten patient safety.

Through a design partnership between Simulation and Training Environment Lab (SiTEL) and Herman Miller Health Care, the center was built to provide health care professionals with cutting-edge learning tools, including expert trainers, gaming and multimodal training with simulator mannequins and live interaction with real actors to play standardized patients. The technology and solutions offered by ST Engineering Antycip might be something worth looking into by organizations and businesses that wish to make use of training simulators, whether that be in aerospace or, indeed, health care. Simulation, modeling, analysis, testing, visualization, and more can all be driven forward with revolutionary technology such as this.

“With the ever-changing healthcare environment, it is important to support progressive and forward-thinking concepts that improve care delivery,” said Beth Nickels, president of Herman Miller Healthcare. “Our partnership with SiTEL reinforces our commitment to strengthening health care’s future by creating the best training and education opportunities possible.”

The center was designed with the goals of elastic capacity, adaptive capability and future scalability to account for a growing population of users and technological advancements.

The facility serves as a living lab where continuous development of new programs can be tested in realistic health care settings prior to being integrated into operating facilities, according to a statement from Herman Miller Healthcare.

“Medical education is shifting from the traditional classroom experience to experiencing real-time lessons,” said Dr. Yuri Millo, director of SiTel, who thought up the idea for the Center. “Through CSC and its strategic design, health care professionals will be able to practice the latest medical trends in a very realistic setting, thus strengthening the preparation of the next generation of caregivers.”

Philadelphia-based Burt Hill Architects, a Stantec company, contributed to the structural and environmental design designs with sustainable design principles that guided materials selections, shading and the energy solutions for the space, according to the statement.

“As CSC’s design capabilities continue to advance the future of healthcare education in Washington, D.C., SiTEL’s overall goal is to grow into a network of learning centers that bring similar quality training and philosophies to professionals worldwide,” the statement said.
