BOSTON — Margulies Perruzzi Architects and Cutler Associates announced that the firms have been selected to design and construct a new medical office building in Holden, Mass. for Oriol Health Care.

The Boston-based architectural and interior design firm Margulies Perruzzi Architects and Cutler Associates, a design and construction management firm based in Worcester, Mass., were selected for design and construction management services for a new three-story 36,000-square-foot medical office building at the entry.

Oriol Health Care, owner of the former Holden District Hospital property, launched a long-term collaborative process with the Town of Holden to develop a health care campus on the hospital site, including a patient care building designed to house ‘cutting edge medical care,’ according to the design firm.

The building will house a family medical practice and other health care providers, in addition to its existing medical arts building and skilled nursing facility on the site.

“Patients have become savvy consumers regarding their healthcare, and Oriol’s focus on patient concerns has been paramount in the design of this new building,” said Marc Margulies, principal at the architecture firm. “Drawing on our prior experience working with Cutler, MPA is excited to partner again with Cutler on the clinical design of Oriol’s new patient care building.”

Construction on the new medical office building will start as soon as weather permits, according to officials from the design firm. The project is estimated for completion by the end of 2012 or early 2013.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kindred Healthcare announced today that it is buying post-acute care services provider RehabCare Group in a consolidation trend sweeping across the healthcare industry.

The deal is valued at $877 million in cash and stock and will make Kindred the largest provider of rehabilitation services in the country.

Kindred opened a new hospital in Springfield, Ill. Last December.

Government healthcare plans are looking to bundle payments for coverage in an effort to cut healthcare costs, spurring consolidation among providers and garnering the interest of private equity firms.

Combined, Kindred will now operate 118 long-term acute care hospitals, 226 nursing and rehabilitation centers, 121 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and 1,808 hospital, nursing center and assisted living rehabilitation therapy services contracts.

Future Kindred deals will likely involve home-health services instead of long-term acute care hospitals. Kindred and Select Medical Holdings Corp. now command half the long-term acute care hospital market.

According to analysts, future takeovers may include Emergency Medical Services Corp., an ambulance company, and HealthSouthCorp., an operator of rehabilitation centers.
