BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) announced plans for a new pediatric hospital on its Brookhaven Campus on Feb. 9. The new hospital is intended to replace CHOA’s 255-bed Egleston Hospital at Emory University in Atlanta, according to the announcement, and estimates that its total investment will be between $1 billion and $1.3 billion. The new hospital is just one part of a larger redevelopment project for CHOA.

CHOA has hinted at massive redevelopment for more than a year now and already has a 45-acre office complex in Atlanta that will become the Center for Advanced Pediatrics. The center is the first phase of the redevelopment project, and the eight-story medical building broke ground on Jan. 11.

Design, planning and permitting work for the new Brookhaven hospital is expected through the rest of this year, with more specific transportation, site and building plans in development over the next 18 months — which means there are not many details available to share about the project as of yet, according to a statement.

“As the only freestanding pediatric health care system in Georgia, we need to ensure that we are able to serve the children in our state,” said Donna Hyland, president and CEO at CHOA in a recent statement. “To meet growing demand, we must find more ways to provide access to those who need CHOA’s unique specialized care by improving and expanding our facilities.”

After construction on the new Brookhaven hospital is complete, CHOA will no longer operate an inpatient facility in the previous Egleston location. Plans for the use of the Egleston campus have not yet been determined.

“The health of Georgia’s children has consistently been one of my top priorities,” said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, according to a statement. “Children’s Healthcare provides vital care for children from across the state, and its plans for a new hospital and continued statewide growth will help ensure that Georgia’s kids have a healthy future.”

Additionally, CHOA has other developments in the works with Emory University that will include an Atlanta Hawks training and medical facility, according to a statement.
