Joseph B. Guglielmo
As of April, pharmacist and clinical scientist Joseph B. Guglielmo will be the new dean of University of California San Francisco’s School of Pharmacy, where he’ll be shaping up the course of therapeutic sciences, pharmacy education, patient care and health policy. Having served as the school’s interim dean since July 2012, Guglielmo also led its Department of Clinical Pharmacy as the Thomas A. Oliver Chair in Clinical Pharmacy.
A professor of the school’s clinical pharmacy, he also currently serves as associate director of pharmaceutical services in the UCSF Medical Center, maintaining clinical practice as an infectious-disease pharmacist. As a contribution to antibiotic safety, Guglielmo developed the UCSF Medical Center Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in the 1980s to study and improve the practices governing the use of antimicrobials in hospitals. Other works of his include the UCSF Medication Outcome Center to improve medication use and management, as well as clinical pharmacy services for UCSF’s HIV/AIDS program.
