DALLAS — Parkland Health & Hospital System’s Hatcher Station Health Center recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. The $22 million facility sits on seven acres in South Dallas and replaced the old East Dallas Health Center.

“It has brightened up this part of the neighborhood. We hope it will lead to even more development,” said Rev. Donald R. Parish Sr. of True Lee Missionary Baptist Church, which is located directly behind the health center.

Before construction of the Hatcher health center, the area was dominated by illegal businesses, including a shady motel and an unlicensed nightclub. For a decade, residents petitioned to have the strip demolished. Now that the health center is established, the residents want the area to keep getting better.

Currently, there are no retail or real restaurants on the two-acre tract of land near the clinic. The Bertrand Neighborhood Association is holding monthly markets to attract vendors and entrepreneurs. Held every fourth Saturday, the next meeting is on June 25.

Since the opening on May 19, 2015, the Hatcher health center has seen more than 5,000 patients per month and dispensed over 119,000 prescriptions. The clinic provides adult, geriatric, behavioral health, pharmacy, lab and radiology, financial counseling, a refugee outreach program, family planning, gynecology, obstetrics, sonogram and mental health services. The Women & Infants Specialty Health program provided care for more than 14,000 patient encounters alone.

The one-story facility is located across the street from the Hatcher DART light-rail station on the Green Line with patients and staff alike utilizing the convenient transportation.

Hatcher health center is a public-private partnership between the City of Dallas and nonprofit Frazier Revitalization, based in Dallas. The health center is part of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care system, which has 12 primary clinics, 12 school-based clinics and mobile vans in Dallas County. On a 25-year lease with Parkland, Hatcher’s health center has the option to purchase after seven years.

DALLAS — BOKA Powell a Dallas-based architecture and interiors firm, has completed design work on the $11.2 million Hatcher Station Health Center, developed by Dallas-based Frazier Revitalization Inc. and operated by Parkland Health and Hospital System, also based in Dallas.

The 44,300-square-foot clinic near Dallas’ Fair Park is located on a seven-acre site adjacent to DART’s Hatcher Station.

“The clinic was designed to efficiently and effectively deliver community health services for adults, geriatrics, women and children in an underserved part of Dallas,” said Sean Kirton, senior project designer for BOKA Powell, in a statement. “This project is a part of the community, and was developed in partnership with the community, offering residents easy access to primary care rather than traveling long distances to the main hospital and sitting in the emergency room.”

With a modern, flexible design, the new facility is anticipated to serve up to 75,000 patients annually. The health center offers basic primary care, behavioral health services, a Women & Infants Specialty Health (WISH) center, a pharmacy, community health and wellness programs, as well as mobile mammography.

The 66 exam rooms feature a flexible equipment setup that allows providers to utilize unoccupied rooms to respond to demand as patient volumes fluctuate throughout the day, reducing wait times and improving efficiency.

“The community’s response to the new clinic has been overwhelming,” said Jane Hunley, interim site administrator at Hatcher Station Health Center. “During the health center’s first week of operation, about 1,500 patients were served by primary care physicians, pathology, radiology, women’s services and patient financial services. These included scheduled appointments, as well as walk-in services. In addition, more than 800 prescriptions were dispensed by the pharmacy.”

Hatcher Station Health Center is located at 4600 Scyene Road (intersection of Scyene and Hatcher) in Dallas. The facility consolidates and replaces Parkland’s former East Dallas Health Center on Live Oak Street. The new clinic meets the City of Dallas’ Green Building guidelines for new construction, ensuring long-term enhanced building performance.

“We’re honored to have partnered with Frazier Revitalization, Inc. and Parkland’s user groups to design this new clinic in an underserved neighborhood of Dallas,” said Don Powell, principal at BOKA Powell. “This project is representative of progress in this community. Its modern, open design is adaptable for multiple uses beyond healthcare, such as community meetings and events.”

DALLAS — Parkland Health & Hospital System recently opened its newest Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) clinic in Dallas. The Hatcher Station Health Center welcomed its first patients on May 19.

Parkland Health & Hospital System, based in Dallas, replaced the aging East Dallas Health Center with the new Hatcher Station Health Center. The 44,000-square-foot, one-story health center is located across the street from the Hatcher Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) station, providing access for patients between the hospital and health center via the transit system’s green line.

The clinic, which expects more than 75,000 patients a year, includes adult, pediatric, geriatric, behavioral health, pharmacy, lab and radiology services. There is also space for financial counseling for patients and families. The 60 exam rooms allow Parkland to add two new clinical teams and provide more services to the community. In an effort to reduce the need for acute hospital services, there also are programs that focus on education, prevention and early intervention.

The health center is part of Frazier Revitalization Inc. (FRI), an organization founded in 2005 that aims to revitalize and transform the Frazier neighborhood in Dallas south and east of Fair Park through economic and cultural development. Parkland is leasing space for the health center from FRI.

“With increased clinical space and a convenient location along the DART rail line, the Hatcher Station clinic represents a huge leap forward in access to care in the community,” said Sharon Phillips, Parkland’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer, population health, in a statement. “We are grateful to Frazier Revitalization Inc. for partnering with us to make this clinic a reality.”

Parkland launched its Community Oriented Primary Care program in 1987 to offer medical care throughout Dallas neighborhoods. The program includes 12 primary-care clinics, 12 school-based clinics and four mobile vans. The health centers offer primary care for men, women and children of all ages and include services such as check-ups, immunizations, behavioral health and cancer screening.

“We are pleased to continue our long-standing tradition of partnering with the community and we look forward to being a part of the Hatcher Station Village,” said Cesar Termulo Jr., MD, lead pediatric physician, Hatcher Station Health Center. “This is an opportunity to provide health care in South Dallas for those individuals who might not otherwise have access to a primary care provider.”
