TAMPA, Fla. – The second phase of the $300 million Florida Hospital in Tampa is currently underway; tapping HuntonBrady of Orlando as the architect and Robins and Morton of Birmingham, Ala., as the general contractor.

The expansion project includes 24 brand new operating rooms, a new hospital entrance and over 100 all private dedicated surgical care beds.

Construction of the first phase of the project consisted of expanding an existing parking garage located near the Pepin Heart Institute by 300 spaces.

The second phase is comprised of building a new six-story surgical tower, which began in October 2018, and will concentrate on pancreatic and liver surgery as well as neurology while also providing more beds, operating rooms and parking.

“This is a state-of-the-art project that will provide specialty care in Tampa Bay that you can’t find anywhere else in our area,” said Brian Adams, president and CEO of Florida Hospital Tampa. “Our goal is to design a surgical tower that isn’t just relevant today, but will be relevant 30 years from now, combining surgical innovation and the most advanced robotic technologies with the nation’s best physicians.”

The expansion also includes 314,000-square-feet in six floors, 140,000-square-feet dedicated to surgery in operating rooms, and pre- and post-operative care and sterile processing.

The project will create a 132-bed capacity growth including 24 in the surgical intensive care unit and 72 in progress care as well as 36 beds for future growth.

“This is about more than growth and expansion, this is about connecting our community to the kind of expert health care that’s needed and delivering it with Florida Hospital’s unique brand of inspired, compassionate care,” said Mike Schultz, President and CEO of Florida Hospital West Florida Division.

The Taneja Center for Innovative Surgery at Florida Hospital Tampa is expected to open in 2021 and will bring an estimated 117 new clinical jobs in the first year, and 587 new jobs by the fifth year.

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Brasfield & Gorrie of Birmingham, Ala., announced a major construction milestone as the leaders of Winter Park and Florida Hospital celebrated the topping out of the Winter Park Hospital Nicholas Pavilion. Crews from Brasfield & Gorrie raised a tree over the structure, adorned with Winter Park’s community symbol — peacock feathers.

The $85 million, 160,000-square-foot project allowed the hospital to convert its existing rooms into 140 all-private patients rooms, which will be used for orthopedic care, surgical, and other services, as well as a new lobby all scheduled to open next year.

The new Nicholas Pavilion aims to help the hospital meet the community’s growing needs, considering nearly 30,000 people live in Winter Park, along with thousands more in the surrounding areas. According to the hospital’s website, Florida Hospital is one of the country’s largest not-for-profit healthcare providers with 22 campuses serving communities throughout Florida. Physicians and clinical teams perform nearly 9,500 surgeries each year, with the hospital also recording more than 75,000 outpatient visits and more than 16,000 inpatient admissions annually, according to a statement released to the media.

“Winter Park Memorial Hospital was founded more than 60 years ago with the goal of creating a world-class hospital to serve the community’s health needs close to home,” Jennifer Wandersleben, administrator of Winter Park Memorial Hospital said in a statement. “It is because of the generous support of Tony and Sonja Nicholson, Brasfield & Gorrie and RLF architects, and the dozens of men and women who have been working tirelessly to give Winter Park this stunning Pavilion, that we are one step closer to delivering the expanded health care services that this rapidly growing area needs.”

In total, crews spent more than 40,000 hours working on the Nicholson Pavilion, using 10,000-cubic-yards of concrete, 979-tons of reinforcing steel and 373,000-square-feet of formwork.

“With this milestone made possible by the hard work and dedication of our employees, subcontractors, and partners, we are one step closer to delivering this facility to meet the needs of the community. We are grateful for our longstanding relationship with Florida Hospital and look forward to the completion of this project in 2019,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Tim Johnson.

CHICAGO — Northwestern Medicine’s presence in Chicago has gotten a lot larger with a 1 million-square-foot outpatient pavilion that offers retail and dining options in addition to health services.

Northwestern Medicine opened the pavilion in the heart of its downtown medical campus. The campus is home to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

“This world-class medical building was designed to create an exceptional experience for both patients and physicians,” said Richard J. Gannotta, DHA, FACHE, president of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, in a statement. “The welcoming environment will be supported by the latest technology and access to the highest quality medical services throughout the Northwestern campus.”

The 25-story building will house an outpatient surgery center and the Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care (CCOSC). Diagnostics and digital imaging is expanding services to the 17th floor. An expanded diagnostic and imaging center will offer blood draws, EKGs, urine testing and an array of medical imaging, diagnostics and therapeutics including MRI, CT scan, ultrasound and plain film.

Additionally, the outpatient center offers an ambulatory surgery center with operating rooms, readmission testing and a diagnostic testing center, electrocardiography services and phlebotomy services.

The pavilion is part of Phase II of Northwestern Medicine’s Shop & Dine Northwestern, a 70,000-square-foot retail and restaurant development, which is incorporated within Northwestern Medicine’s campus that is one block east of Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile shopping district. The first phase was completed last November.

When leasing options were first proposed in 2011, Northwestern faced obstacles from doctor groups, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. Doctors groups were concerned with paying more to lease a space as well as losing patients.

The facility has already leased retail space to a number of clients, including Stan’s Donuts, LYFE Kitchen and Cosi. Retailers can lease space throughout the first two floors, and the facility offers a parking garage with seven floors of patient and visitor parking.

Northwestern’s new building is also being built with sustainable design elements. The building will feature high-efficiency fixtures and systems, a green roof and sustainable building materials to conserve energy. The design hopes to attract additional retailers that are interested in reducing operating costs.

Roughly 25,000 people work at Northwestern’s medical campus, and 13 million tourists, patients, workers, guests and residents walk across the campus during the year.
