COLLEGE STATION, Texas.—McCarthy Building Companies, which was founded in 1864, has completed its expansion and renovation project at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in College Station, located near Texas A&M University. The multi-phased renovation project of tens of thousands of square feet of healthcare space added 24 new beds in wards designed for women’s and children’s care, dialysis work and “intermediate” care; Page was the architectural firm for the project.

The renovation work was done on levels 1, 3 and 5 of the hospital while it was still in operation, requiring the construction teams to be respectful of the needs of a working healthcare facility so that staff and patients—as well as visitors—would not be adversely affected during the upgrade project.

KBTX reported that the renovations were aimed at adding 16 state-of-the-art patient beds to the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, which first opened in 2013. This addition will thereby increase the capacity of the medical facility to be able to care for nearly 2,000 patients annually.

“At McCarthy, healthcare projects are the core of what we do,” stated Preston Hodges, McCarthy Houston’s division vice president. “We continue to evolve with the ever-changing landscape of healthcare construction as well as building processes to ensure safety for patients, staff and visitors.”

McCarthy’s multi-phase healthcare and research facility projects are prominent around the country, as well as in Texas specifically. In addition to the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in College Station, McCarthy’s work in the Lone Star State also entails the CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Baylor Scott & White Health, which operates the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in College Station, is Texas’s largest not-for-profit hospital system. The nonprofit showed $1 billion of annual revenue on over $725 million of operating income in 2019 alone.

McCarthy is the oldest privately held construction company in the United States, with more than 150 years of work to its credit. Last year Engineering News-Record ranked McCarthy, whose home base is in St. Louis, the 12th largest domestic general contractor in the nation. The firm employs a staff of nearly 4,000 professionals and is entirely employee-owned.

In addition to Texas A&M, College Station is also home to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library

“We were glad to assist Baylor Scott & White Health to provide the lasting impact that this hospital will have on the community,” said McCarthy’s Hodges.
