SARASOTA, Fla.—Gresham Smith announced on December 12 the completion of the Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion at Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota campus in southwest Florida. The 82-bed, 95,000-square-foot facility replaces the health system’s older psychiatric hospital across the street, enhancing, expanding and centralizing inpatient and outpatient care for people affected by mental and behavioral health challenges.

“Mental illness affects one in five Americans every year, so it’s imperative that the right behavioral health services are available in the right place, at the right time,” said Michael Willis, AIA, LEED AP, Senior Architect and Project Manager at Gresham Smith. “Our team is proud of the safe, therapeutic, healing environment we designed and are pleased to know that it will provide a full continuum of inpatient and outpatient services in one convenient location for the Gulf Coast region.”

In addition to intake space and outpatient services, the pavilion includes four inpatient units dedicated to specific patient populations: a 16-bed geriatric unit, a 20-bed acute care unit, a 24-bed adult unit and a 22-bed adolescent unit. Front-of-house and back-of-house circulation emphasizes safety for both patients and staff, and standardized floor plans enhance efficiency. However, while the units are similar in layout, unique colors, finishes and artwork on each floor—which were strategically chosen to reduce environmental stressors—give each space a unique identity.

To maximize natural light in the facility’s inpatient rooms, the design team increased the ceiling height to allow for larger windows. Additionally, glass partitions around staff and social spaces allow light further into the building while also enhancing sightlines. Promoting dignity and independence, inpatient rooms allow patients who stay overnight to control the temperature and mood lighting in their room, open and close their blinds, and certain patient populations have access to a personal shower. The interior courtyard, which features a garden, patio and gym, as well as upper-level screened-in porches, provide respite and further connect patients to nature.

Gresham Smith provided architecture and interior design services for the project, which is a continuation of the firm’s more than 20-year relationship with Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Gresham Smith also designed the main campus’ nine-story patient tower, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facility, 600-car parking garage, surgery department vertical expansion, and numerous renovations within the hospital itself.

DeAngelis Diamond served as the general contractor for the project.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Dana B. Kenyon Company (DBK) and Gresham Smith announced in late June the completion of a new multispecialty surgery center, home to Jax Spine & Pain Centers and UF Health Jacksonville, under the direction of UF Jacksonville Physicians, Inc. The largest free-standing multispecialty surgery center in the region, the 54,000-square-foot facility was designed and constructed to offer specialized health care services, outpatient surgeries convenient to the community, interventional spine procedures and pain management. DBK delivered this facility using their design-build approach and partnered with Gresham Smith, the architect and interior designer, and ETM, the civil engineer.

“Our design for this facility focused on not only creating a welcoming, comfortable environment but also providing a space that empowers physicians to provide patients with the highest level of spinal care and pain management,” said Rick Bouchereau, AIA, vice president at Gresham Smith. “We’re honored to have worked with Jax Spine & Pain Centers and UF Health to create a facility that will give residents in southeast Jacksonville convenient access to specialty outpatient surgical care, and comprehensive specialty care, all in one location.”

Highly visible from J. Turner Butler Boulevard, one of Jacksonville’s busiest roadways, the new facility is a modern landmark on Jacksonville’s southeast side. The building can be seen from every angle on surrounding roadways, which required camouflaging the back-of-house functions. Wood accents and earth tones on the building’s modern exterior provide aesthetic warmth, and the glass and wood canopy over the main entrance offers shelter from the elements and creates a sense of arrival.

“The interior design team and DBK worked closely with the doctors at Jax Spine & Pain Centers and the executive director of support services at UF Health to incorporate their vision into the space. UF Health’s clinical space on the second floor is cohesive with other new UF Health locations, offering quality care in a luxury setting, while the finishes and lighting in Jax Spine & Pain Center’s space on the third floor evoke a sense of calm for pain management patients,” said Gresham Smith Senior Interior Designer Mary Couch, RID, IIDA, LEED AP BD+C.

Always keeping patient comfort and convenience in mind during design and construction, the main lobby features warm earth tones, durable terrazzo flooring, and a custom wood feature wall with integrated lighting to create a relaxing, spa-like environment. The first floor houses an ambulatory surgery center with four operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, a separate pain procedure suite with four procedure rooms, and a dedicated MRI suite. Visitors to UF Health clinics on the second floor enjoy views of the large green roof while waiting, and standardized exam rooms organized around centralized work hubs create an efficient, pleasant patient experience. Located on the third floor, Jax Spine & Pain Center includes exam rooms, two procedure rooms, infusion rooms, a lab, offices, staff support spaces, and open waiting areas with large windows and views of the surrounding neighborhood.

“Despite the challenges of constructing this project during the pandemic, DBK is proud of the accomplishments of the entire team,” said Joe Bajalia, President of DBK. “After the successful completion of multiple facilities for the group of doctors at the Jax Spine & Pain Centers, we are proud to continue our partnership providing innovative healthcare to the community.”

This project continues Dana B. Kenyon/Gresham Smith’s partnership with Jax Spine & Pain Centers. The firms previously designed and constructed the CenterOne Surgery Center and Medical Office Building on Centurion Road. The new multispecialty surgery center & medical office building is located at 5191 First Coast Tech Parkway in Jacksonville.

LANSING, Mich. – Gresham Smith recently announced that construction is complete on McLaren Greater Lansing, the first facility on McLaren Health Care’s new campus in Lansing. Designed in partnership with national architecture/engineering firm, HED, the nine-story, 517,000-square-foot replacement hospital represents the largest one-time investment in McLaren Health Care history, replacing two existing hospital facilities with one state-of-the-art facility that advances patient care, comfort and convenience.

Designed to meet the needs of residents in Michigan’s capital city, and adjacent to Michigan State University, the new facility includes a Level III Trauma Center/Emergency Department, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, comprehensive cardiac programs, interventional platform with 20 operating rooms and medical/surgical unit. Intuitive wayfinding, as well as smart planning, help to clearly guide patients, visitors and others to the multitude of services offered.

“From our progressive approach of creating positive user experiences with access to natural light, inspiring environments, and intuitive wayfinding to creating state-of-the-art hybrid operating rooms, this greenfield hospital with set a new standard of highly advanced care in Michigan’s capital city,” said Healthcare Vice President Steve Stokes, AIA, CLGB, NCARB. “The Gresham Smith Team is proud of the collaborative work accomplished with our partners at McLaren Health Care.”

With a focus on human experience and patient safety, the hospital’s 240 private patient rooms feature personal temperature controls, expanded in-room entertainment options and large windows with views of the outdoors. A public cafeteria and community hub offers convenience for family members, staff and visitors, while a training center, simulation labs that support medical education, an expanded lounge and sleep rooms, elevate the staff experience. The design team enhanced operational efficiencies by limiting the travel distance between the emergency department and imaging services. McLaren Greater Lansing was designed and planned to have the ability to change course to respond to future situations that may occur with an adaptable and flexible platform of care.

“It is rare you find a collection of firms and individuals all committed and balanced to support the client’s goals and then deliver them,” said HED Healthcare Sector Leader David Jaeger, AIA, LEED AP, EDAC. “HED as architect and engineer of record and in partnership with Gresham Smith and as an entity working in a design-build contract have delivered value to McLaren not typically possible with standard contracting methods.  Many state-of-the-art technical systems were balanced with a budget and schedule that required constant care by all.”

The hospital was completed on-time and under budget, despite workforce and supply challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a factory fabricated ceiling rack system and exterior panels, the construction of the hospital’s enclosure met an aggressive schedule and required fewer contractors to be on site at one time. This also allowed direct connection with the project’s mechanical engineers and the sub-contractors who were brought in early on to discuss the placement of the buildings’ main systems.

“By combining the national expertise of Gresham Smith and HED with the talent of companies in Lansing and throughout Michigan, we assembled a unique team to design and build a healthcare campus that will care for our community for generations to come,” said Daniel Medrano, vice president of Facility Management for McLaren Health Care.

Gresham Smith is also designing and planning the adjacent 60,400 square-foot Medical Services Building on the McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital campus and the cancer center and proton therapy center expansion at McLaren Health Care’s hospital in Flint, Michigan.

PENSACOLA, Fla.—With the coronavirus canceling most groundbreaking events for new healthcare construction, many such ceremonies have gone virtual, including one for a health campus now underway in Florida’s Panhandle.

In early November, construction officially started for Baptist Health Care’s new health campus, which is valued at $615 million and will be situated on a parcel of land encompassing 57 acres.  The new healthcare center will entail a 602,000-square-feet hospital that will have 264 beds spread out over 10 floors.  The beds will be spread out for various levels of care, including ICU, labor and delivery, and medical/surgery.  Specialized areas will be devoted to Level II trauma care, triage, specialty cardiac care as well as a dedicated surgery and operations department.

Another part of the campus will be home to the Multispecialty Health Center, a six-floor, 178,000-square-foot complex that will offer 162 examination rooms as well as spaces for oncology, women’s health, bariatrics, surgery pre-optimization, cardiology and wound care.

In addition to the healthcare facilities, the campus will also offer dedicated walking paths, a chapel and “healing garden,” cafeteria and coffee shop, room for outdoor classes and rehabilitation areas.  Future space is likely to be set up for a dine-in restaurant.

The health campus project was announced in the summer of 2019, and has continued during the pandemic with such job requirements as securing financing, and initial site preparation and design planning.

Design and construction firms have also been tapped by BHC for the project.  These include architectural firm Gresham Smith, program manager Meadows & Ohly and equipment and technology planner Smith Seckman and Reid.

Brasfield & Gorrie, whose home office is located in Birmingham, Ala., has been tapped to work as the new health campus’s general contractor.  In a statement emailed to HCO News, Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Susan Stabler said that healthcare is essential to any community, and her firm believes in making such ties between people and healthcare stronger.

“We are honored to partner with Baptist Health Care in their mission to provide the people of Northwest Florida and South Alabama with world-class care,” Stabler said.

Due to the safety concerns surrounding holding a live groundbreaking ceremony, instead the event was broadcast on Facebook Live and YouTube on Nov. 3, 71 years to the day that Baptist Hospital, the crown jewel in BNC’s portfolio, first opened.

“This new health campus will serve our region now and for generations to come,” BHC president and CEO Mark Faulkner said in a statement during the groundbreaking.  “Our founders’ bold vision led to generations of quality care for our community.

“This transformational project will allow us to continue providing patient-centered care in a setting that offers the opportunity to evolve and adapt as the needs of our community change for generations to come.”

The campus itself is expected to be completed sometime in 2023.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — McLaren Health Care has tapped Gresham Smith as the architect for their current collaboration with Michigan State University (MSU) in creating a new healthcare campus.

In addition to the development of a campus master plan, the firm is providing planning, architecture and interior design services for the new $451 million McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, a replacement teaching hospital, medical office building and cancer center.

The new hospital consolidates two Lansing-area hospitals and will be built along with the 250,000-square-foot medical office building, 32,000-square-foot cancer center and parking structure on a 40-acre site.

The 517,000-square-foot, 240-bed, nine-story greenfield facility will house medical/surgical units, orthopedics, general surgery, labor and delivery, inpatient psychiatric, an intensive care unit, an emergency department and radiology.

“This project has been in the work for five plus years, and what we do is bring clarity to the very complex issues of hospital architecture” said Steve Stokes, the lead on the project. “We had to go through a heavy process, applying the LEAN approach while taking two, old existing hospitals, and combining them. We went through an entire brain storming session with the leadership and came up with project goals.”

The project goals Stokes described includes creating a destination of choice for employees, caregivers and the public; building a national benchmark in the delivery of evidence based care, while incorporating LEAN principles and safety; achieving the highest return on investments; transforming the experience for patients, their families and caregivers. And lastly, fostering a continuous environment of learning through clinical research and innovation.

“This bridges McLaren’s relationship with Michigan State University,” said Stokes.

Another key focus of the design stresses the importance of intuitive wayfinding.

“Every time you go to facilities in and around the country, we find this to be a hot topic of conversation when it comes to clarity on where to go,” said Stokes. “With this facility, we took that key component and made a strong central point of place, the lobby. When people enter the space, it always has the same orientation. If you go from the first floor up to the second floor, and you’re looking out the direction you came in from.”

Stokes continued, explaining how there is one avenue for public circulation that’s segregated from patient and staff circulation. It works as a process of moving patients forward versus sending them back—helping decrease wait time.

“Separation of flow was critical as well as access to natural light,” said Stokes. “The other key component is the 24-hour front door in the Emergency Department, has its own access, own security features and shutdown protocol. It has it’s ‘own flow’, per se.”

Gresham Smith has teamed with Southfield-based Harley Ellis Devereaux who will be providing engineering services and is the architect-of-record for the new hospital.

When fully complete, this comprehensive health care campus will be home to more than 1,000 physicians, researchers, educators and other members of the academic and medical team.

“The thing I’m most proud of having worked on this project so far is the brotherhood of the owner, contactor, team, and everyone coming together to find the means to the end while using a tight budget—which will serve Lansing for the next 50 years,” said Stokes.

Groundbreaking of this new facility took place in December 2018 and the team anticipates the project will be completed by 2022.
