ATLANTA—Patients needing intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital can access 52 new ICU beds on the ninth and tenth floors of its critical care west tower.

The Beck Group, the design and construction firm, recently completed a patient bed expansion project to offset the closure of Atlanta Medical Center late last year. The project also added more nurse stations, soiled and clean rooms, and staff support spaces.

Hospital officials selected Beck and its partners PF&A, a woman-owned healthcare architecture firm and engineering firm WSP, to expand its West Tower Inpatient Units.

“Grady is vital to our community, and we worked feverishly to design and deliver world-class healthcare to support it during this critical time,” said Ben Watkins, The Beck Group’s regional director in Atlanta.

The 30,000-square-foot expansion is part of a larger plan to fund a multi-phased $130 million hospital renovation. This effort will offset the closure of the nearby Atlanta Medical Center and help alleviate the bed shortage at Grady and in the city of Atlanta. With the closing of AMC, Grady, located at 80 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, is the only Level 1 trauma center in the city.

Upon completing the multi-phase renovation, Grady Memorial will have 200 new patient beds, ensuring patients continue receiving the highest quality care.

The Beck Group is a collaborative team of architects, builders, and technology experts transforming how its clients design and build. The century-old firm is the largest design-build firm in the United States, with over 700 employees in ten offices across the U.S. and Mexico.

CHARLOTTEAlabama-based general contracting firm Brasfield & Gorrie announced that it has topped out the first phase of its new Pappas Properties medical office building in downtown Charlotte. Brasfield & Gorrie officials were on hand to celebrate the milestone along with project partners Atrium Health, Pappas and architecture and design firm the Beck Group at the site of the medical complex, located at Kenilworth Avenue and Harding Place in Charlotte’s Midtown district.

The structure is to be the first of two medical office buildings in the development, the company announced. Construction began in May, with the entire project slated for completion sometime in the third quarter of next year.

Brasfield & Gorrie is building the pair of medical office buildings and a nine-level parking deck for client Atrium Health. The first building entails 200,000 square feet of space on top of two levels of cast-in-place parking.

A new outpatient facility will offer healthcare services ranging from cardiac rehabilitation, state-of-the-art imaging rooms as well as other spaces for cardiovascular services. The five-story facility will be known as the “Atrium Health’s Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute – Kenilworth” location.

“We are grateful for our ongoing relationships with both Pappas Properties and Atrium Health,” Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Michael Byrd said in a statement. “This facility will increase healthcare accessibility in Charlotte in an area where residents can live, work and play.”

“Pappas Properties is honored to have partnered with Atrium in joining our vision for the future delivery of community healthcare, anchored within a multi-faceted mixed-use project,” added developer Pappas Properties CEO and founder Peter A. Pappas.

The building housing medical facilities itself will be joined with the precast parking deck, which offers spaces for 1,400-plus vehicles. The parking deck will be connected to the medical office buildings via a four-level pedestrian bridge,

“The Beck Group is very proud to be collaborating with Atrium and Pappas Properties on such a unique opportunity,” the Beck Group National Director of Healthcare Sean Wilson said in a statement. “This project is the first of many that will transform the way care is delivered in the city of Charlotte and our neighboring communities.”

“This campus will be further developed in phases and include additional medical, residential, hotel, and restaurant uses that will further amenitize the site,” Peter A. Pappas said in May, according to the Birmingham Business Journal.

Brasfield & Gorrie was founded in 1964 and now boasts 12 offices across the country. The company reported 2018 revenues of $3.3 billion.

MARKHAM, Ontario — The Markham Stouffville Hospital has received LEED Silver certification on its new 385,000-square-foot expansion. The original building, Building A, which was opened in March 1990 also received upgrades such as new floors, windows and paint. The existing patient rooms were equipped with hand washing stations as well as new private bathrooms and medical charting technology closer to the beds.

The addition of a second building doubled the size of the hospital. PCL Constructors, Canada Inc. worked with B+H Architects to expand and enhance lab space to allow for more automated test results. Together the companies transformed the old Emergency Center into a new Cancer Center and designed two sets of operating centers. Building A has been designed for one-day procedures and includes 6 new operating rooms. Building B has 10 new operating rooms that have been reserved for larger and more serious cases. This new space has the ability to use minimally invasive technology for surgeries.

The new building will be a “calm, simple building without a lot of details,” said Suman Bahl, vice president of corporate services and capital development at Markham Stouffville Hospital, in a statement. The $400 million project was able to recycle 90 percent of the waste created by construction. PCL Constructors was able to divert the waste, such as concrete, metal, wood and drywall from going to landfills by using it in different parts of the hospital.

Construction, which began in December of 2010, was finished on August 20, 2014. Due to the process of obtaining LEED certification, the hospital was not certified as LEED Silver until a full year later. Some of the components added to the facility to help with the certification were a white roof membrane and green roof areas, exterior lighting designed to minimize light pollution and the installation of low-flow fixtures to reduce water usage throughout the hospital. Mike Wieninger, Vice President and district manager for PCL Constructors Inc. said, “By nature, hospitals require more air exchanges and water than typical buildings, making them more sophisticated to construct sustainably.” By installing the low-flow fixtures, PCL Constructors and the Markham Stouffville Hospital are going to be able to save 40 percent on water usage.

B+H Architects and PCL Constructors did not just focus on making the building sustainable and green after construction. During the project, 16 percent of the materials came from recycled content. The companies also tried to source locally with 31 percent of the material being manufactured and harvested with 800 km’s of the project or 2,400 km’s from the project if shipped by railway or water.

Markham Stouffville Hospital will be the first hospital in Ontario to build a central utility plant that supplies thermal energy, electricity and emergency power through the Markham District Energy, which will save them an estimated 37 percent on energy.

The hospital also wants to inform their staff on the importance of sustainability and what they will be able to do to help with energy savings. The former Intensive Care Unit has been converted into a learning center for the staff and is connected to the city’s Cornell Community Center. The staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital are still getting used to the new system and ways that they can achieve maximum efficiency.

While planning and building the new expansion the goal was to balance energy efficiency, patient comfort, and a healthy work environment. Bahl said, “We are proud to deliver on our promise of a green building as part of our pledge to provide enhanced care and a state-of-the-art work environment.” By building the expansion by LEED certifications, they were able to achieve the sustainable and comfortable environment they aimed for.
