KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Hammes, a national real estate consulting, development, investment and management firm, recently completed the Blue River Surgery Center in Kansas City. The new 22,500-square-foot ambulatory surgery center, which is now open to patients, includes five operating rooms and two specialty procedure rooms for orthopedic, gastroenterology and other multi-specialty cases.

The Blue River Surgery Center was developed on behalf of Surgery Ventures, powered by HCA Healthcare, in collaboration with more than 20 physician partners. The facility, located at 1350 East 104th Street, is located in a fast-growing area in south Kansas City and complements HCA’s existing care delivery network in the region.

Hammes is currently developing a second surgery center in the Kansas City area in partnership with Surgery Ventures and physician partners. It is located in the suburb of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and is expected to open in early 2025.

“It has been rewarding to support Surgery Ventures with the rollout of multiple ambulatory surgery centers throughout the country,” said Justin Shea, Principal of Hammes Partners. “We are excited to see the impact these new surgery centers have in terms of greater access to quality outpatient care in the communities they serve.”

Hammes partnered with ACI Boland Architects and JE Dunn Construction on both the Blue River Surgery Center and the future Lee’s Summit Surgery Center.

Founded in 1991, Hammes is a vertically integrated real estate solutions platform specializing in healthcare real estate strategy and planning, project management, development, investment, and property management.

TAMPA, Fla.—JE Dunn Construction’s Tampa office has seen significant growth in its healthcare operations. Seven notable projects have recently completed, or are now underway, within the state of Florida.

In Tampa, the organization recently met a major milestone at the new Tampa General Hospital Behavioral Health Hospital’s topping out ceremony. This is one of three behavioral health hospitals that JE Dunn Tampa is building.

JE Dunn’s additional healthcare projects currently include:

  • HCA Gulf Coast Dietary Expansion & Renovation
  • HCA Orange Park Rehab Hospital
  • LifePoint Jacksonville Rehab
  • Acadia North Port Behavioral Health Hospital
  • Encompass Villages Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Acadia Jacksonville/St. John’s Behavioral Health Hospital

“Healthcare has always played an important role in our business portfolio. As population growth in Florida continues to grow, these projects bring considerable and important resources to our community,” said Jake Nellis, vice president of JE Dunn Tampa.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida’s population increased by 1.9% in 2022, and in 2023, Florida’s population increased by 1.6%. This is driving an increased demand for healthcare, and particularly mental health services.

Nellis continued, “As we’ve seen an increase in market demand, our team has expanded as well. Last year, we brought on a new healthcare leader, Jeff Wherry, whose knowledge of the market, industry and contacts have been invaluable.”

JE Dunn, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, has been an integral part of the building and construction industry in the state of Florida for the past 30 years. It first opened an office in Tampa Bay in 2015. It continues to grow its footprint, with a focus on commercial, healthcare, education and multifamily projects.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Fort Leonard Wood, located near the Kansas City metropolitan area, will be welcoming a new medical facility in a few years in the form of the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital. The $295 million hospital complex has been designed to replace an outdated, 450,000-square-foot hospital, which will be entirely demolished as part of the project site work.

The centerpieces of the rather hefty medical facility will include a 235,376-square-foot hospital, a clinic encompassing 193,332 square feet of medical space, a five-bay ambulance garage, plus a 20,459-square-foot central utility plant.

The project came together following a successful design-build proposal generated by architect RLF of Orlando and JE Dunn Construction, which has a major office location in Kansas City. According to a recent news release provided by JE Dunn, the two firms aimed to work together to create a world-class healthcare operation at Fort Leonard Wood that “rivals those found in the civilian sector, pays homage to the rich history of Fort Leonard Wood and takes advantage of the site’s rolling terrain.” Accordingly, the design incorporates local building materials and features what the company calls an “intuitive layout.”

According to the Army, Fort Leonard Wood trains more than 80,000 military and civilian personnel each year and is home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Prime Power School. The base’s namesake, Leonard Wood, was a general born in 1860 who served as the Army’s chief of staff and governor general of the Philippines, a position he served until a terminal illness forced his resignation shortly before his death in 1927. Wood graduated from Harvard Medical School before joining the military, first as a civilian surgeon, before eventually rising through the ranks to become assistant surgeon of the U.S. Army of the Southwest.

Today, Fort Leonard Wood, in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, is the home base for the 102nd Training Division (Maneuver Support) and Missouri’s 35th Engineer Brigade. The base’s medical facilities assist tens of thousands of beneficiaries within a 40-mile radius of the fort.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital was held on June 22, and was attended by city leaders, project partners as well as personnel from the U.S. Army.

“Today is a dream come true for this great military community and for the entire region,” Maj. Gen. Donna Martin, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, said at the June 22 groundbreaking ceremony. “Many thanks to command teams who served before us and had the vision to prioritize the vision for this crucial effort.”

The new hospital facility, which is being administered through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District for the Defense Health Agency, is due to open sometime in 2024.

Added Maj. Gen. Martin: “This kind of project requires teamwork across many entities and could not have happened without the support of the defense health agency, the office of the sergeant general and the U.S. army general command.”

BOISE, Idaho & FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla.—Kansas City, Mo.-based JE Dunn Construction will be managing the design-build of two Air Force base medical facilities, the firm announced last month. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has selected the Midwestern design firm for the $24 million Mountain Home Air Force Base Clinic Modernization project in Idaho and the $21.7 million design-build Eglin Air Force Base Pharmacy in Florida.

The Mountain Home Air Force Base Clinic Modernization near Boise, Idaho, which will support the 366th Medical Group, entails renovations to nearly 42,000 square feet of medical use space. The redesign entails ensuring the medical space has a better ease of mobility for both patient and medical practitioner traffic. In addition, a two-sided water feature will be added as an aesthetic upgrade.

And near Fort Walton Beach, Fla., JE Dunn and architect Hoefer Wysocki will jointly realize renovations at the Eglin Air Force Base Pharmacy to support the base’s 96th Medical Group. The first phase of design-build work will see the team renovate the outpatient and inpatient pharmacy areas of the base. The work’s second phase will entail an addition and renovation to the Satellite Pharmacy, which will be designed around the use of an Rx Auto-Fill Robotic System. Other work to be done as part of the Eglin renovations includes architectural and structural improvements, upgrading classrooms and office space, as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) work.

The work at Elgin marks the 21st project award under the umbrella of the U.S. Air Force Healthcare Facilities modernization program, and it will be the second healthcare-related project for JE Dunn at Eglin after the firm’s earlier “realignment” of the base’s hospital was completed in 2016.

“We are thrilled to continue building our federal healthcare portfolio alongside a trusted partner, Hoefer Wysocki,” JE Dunn Group Manager Craig Stearns said in a statement regarding his firm’s work on the Florida Air Force base.

Meanwhile, JE Dunn’s other work on the Mountain Home Air Force Base Clinic Modernization in Idaho is scheduled to commence this year, with a projected completion date of July 2021.

In another project for the military, last summer JE Dunn was also awarded a contract for a $158 million renovation of the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel in Colorado Springs, according to the Kansas City Business Journal. The chapel at the academy first opened in 1963, with the renovation scheduled to be done in 2023, according to the Journal.

JE Dunn reports a military healthcare portfolio of over $800 million in projects at over a dozen bases around the country as the firm has continued to work under the aegis of the U.S. Air Force Healthcare Facilities Modernization Program over the past decade. The construction firm was founded in 1924 and is now the 10th largest domestic general contractor with 21 locations.
