SUPERIOR, Colo. — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 4 for the new Superior Medical Center in Superior. While the new development is not expected to be complete until January 2018, the new medical center is already 50 percent leased to multiple tenants. The new medical center will provide imaging services (MRI, CT and X-ray), urgent care, primary care and orthopedics once complete.

While the new development is not expected to be complete until January 2018, the new medical center is already 50 percent leased to multiple tenants.

The four-story, 60,000-square-foot building has a budget of $18.5 million, and includes a pedestrian bridge on the second floor that will lead to a four-level parking structure with 229 parking spaces. Intergroup Architects in Littleton, Colo., is the architect on the project, with DSP Builders Inc. out of Denver serving as the general contractor. Pacific Medical Building (PMB) in San Diego, Calif., and the Sawtooth Development Group LLC in Ketchum, Idaho, are both working as the project developers for the new facility.

As the new medical center is located adjacent to “The Sports Stable” — a large indoor sports facility — which was strategically placed since a major goal of the new medical center is to support the medical needs of the many athletes who use it, in addition to the growing community in the downtown Superior master-planned development.

“The reason for this project really was Dr. Hsin, (orthopedic physician at the Sports Stable) he was the visionary behind this,” explained Matt Scoggins, project manager of Sawtooth Development Group in a recent statement. “Given the Sports Stable being [in close proximity to the new building] and the anticipated 1.5 million people coming in and out of there every year playing everything from pickleball to lacrosse to hockey, he thought it would be a synergistic opportunity to bring in that kind of medical backstop for support.”

The building includes energy-efficient LED lighting and PMB-selected locally-sourced finishes made in the U.S. and with recyclable content, according to Bill Smith, senior principal at Intergroup. “The 229-car, off-street parking facility will help reduce traffic and parking concerns for downtown Superior,” said Smith. “The facility will also provide a better accessible experience for patients, visitors, doctors and staff, with the pedestrian bridge. Bicycle racks provided in the parking facility will also encourage a reduction in vehicle traffic to and from downtown.”

The medical office building elevations reflect a variety of building materials, colors, heights and façade articulation/relief, according to Smith. Additionally, varying building materials and colors serve to distinguish building corners, base walls and floor levels, according to Smith. “Elevations feature brown stucco columns that define each building corner, and red brick which matches the brick used on The Sports Stable building to the south,” said Smith.

The defining architectural elements of the parking garage will be the structure’s four corners, which are distinguished by brick, split-face CMU block and contrasting stucco finishes, according to Smith. The north side of the parking structure also features a tower element on each corner that corresponds with each stairway location.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to be part of the downtown Superior project as it represents the continued evolution of the principles of consumerism in health care delivery,” said Jake Rohe, partner and senior vice president at PMB in a recent statement. “The Superior Medical Center will provide a variety of ambulatory uses in a community–focused, mixed-use master plan.”

FISHERVILLE, Va. — Augusta Health in Fisherville announced plans for a $22 million expansion and renovation of its emergency department on April 26 in conjunction with a groundbreaking ceremony. This ER expansion is a long time coming with emergency room traffic having nearly doubled since its opening over 20 years ago with nearly 62,000 patients last year.

The hospital’s emergency department was originally built to serve 35,000 patients. The increase in patient traffic at the Augusta Health ER over the past 20 years has led to patients often being served in hallways or corridors during especially busy times. “The hospital is not only seeing more patients, but patients of higher acuity with trauma, strokes and heart attacks,” said Mary Mannix, Augusta Health president and chief executive officer at Augusta Health, in a recent statement.

The addition and renovation will allow the hospital to expand and grow as the community it serves does the same, according to Mannix. The current space constraints of the hospital limits its ability to accommodate and upgrade to the significant innovations in medical equipment and technology in recent years, and the intention of the hospital’s expansion is to make these upgrades possible.

The plans for the expansion include a 33,000-square-foot, two-story addition, as well as renovating the existing 17,500-square-foot facility. Completion of the project is set for 2019. The expansion will include 48 large, private rooms and dedicated areas for stroke, heart attack and other trauma cases. There will be areas for family consultation, private conversations and for meetings with doctors. Enhanced workspace for EMS, police and mental health professionals are also included in the plans for expansion. A new ambulatory entrance with a canopy will also be built, and 16,288 square feet of shelled space for future use are included in the expansion.

NEW ORLEANS — On Jan. 11, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the expansion of the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. The $225 million project will take place on the 17-acre former New Orleans Adolescent Hospital campus, land that LCMC Health (which manages Children’s Hospital in New Orleans) purchased for $29 million back in 2014. The New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, a psychiatric facility the state opened in 1981, closed in 2009, according to an article by NOLA.com.

Children’s Hospital has the only Pediatric Cardiac ICU in the region. The 20-bed unit will be expanded with all private rooms to serve children in need of this incredibly specialized care.

The project will include a new parking garage, expanded cancer center with inpatient and outpatient services together, expanded critical care facilities and an elevated walkway connecting the new garage to the hospital. The project will also include a same-day surgery unit with private rooms, a cardiac intensive care and neonatal intensive care unit with private rooms, a cancer center and a new main entrance, reception and lobby area.

Construction on the hospital will be completed in three phases, according to a statement by Children’s Hospital. The first and last phases lasting approximately 12 to 18 months and the middle phase taking longer at 24 to 28 months, according to the statement.

“This project is a dream in the making for our physicians, employees, patients and community,” said Mary Perrin, CEO of Children’s Hospital, in a statement. “We’ve worked with our physicians and the families we serve to identify the services and amenities that will improve the delivery of and access to pediatric care.”

The Children’s Hospital currently has 247 beds and Atlanta-based Stanley, Beaman and Sears (SBS) are serving as the architecture firm on the project.
