REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—Swedish construction firm Skanska has been contracted to build five new medical buildings for Cordilleras Health System in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Skanska’s work entails four Mental Health Rehabilitations Centers (MHRC) that can host 16 beds—and the MHRCs are designed to maximize the long-term mental care for patients. In addition to the four rehabilitation facilities, Skanska will also be constructing a three-story co-housing unit to help clients transition out of care and back into the community at large.

Construction of the new Bay Area medical facilities began in November, and completion is projected to occur near the end of 2023. The contract with San Mateo County will earn Skanska $90 million for the healthcare design and construction project.

Though based in Scandinavia, Skanska has had a great deal of medical construction projects in the United States. In 2020 alone, the Swedish firm has worked on a new emergency department for the University of Virginia Health System, and earlier this year, the designer was contracted by the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation to perform a retrofit of the North Central Bronx Hospital.

And closer to the Cordilleras Health System project in Northern California, Skanska has provided construction services for a new outpatient center at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation San Carlos Center.

Skanska’s American subsidiary, Skanska USA, had 2019 sales worth SEK 74 billion (nearly $9 billion USD) and employs 8,000 employees. Worldwide, the company has 35,000 employees and saw 2019 revenues of SEK 177 billion ($21 billion USD).

In addition to healthcare work, Skanska works on civil and commercial projects
