SANTA ROSA, Calif.—Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital (SSRRH) recently celebrated the completion of a new 58,000-square-foot hospital expansion tower, designed by the Sacramento office of global architecture and engineering firm Stantec. This first phase of SSRRH’s major expansion and renovation project will enhance access to acute hospital services to meet Northern California’s growing needs well into the 21st century.

The tower expansion adds significant space to help support the health and healing of patients across multiple departments and services. Highlights include:

  • A new three-story wing to the east side of the existing hospital that includes an additional 40 licensed private-room beds, one operating room (a second one shelled), three new endoscopy rooms, a new outpatient care unit to replace the existing one, and specialized conference room spaces for nurse, clinician, and patient learning.
  • The first Department of Health Care Access and Information project in California to use a prefabricated exterior system.
  • The new facility seamlessly blends prefab elements with non-prefab components, setting a standard sure to be replicated in other acute hospital facilities nationwide.
  • Leveraging the hospital’s recently installed photovoltaic panels, the expansion builds on SSRRH’s commitment to energy independence and is targeting LEED Version 2.2 Verification Treatment. The facility design features natural lighting throughout and sweeping views of the surrounding community.

The second phase of the project—an expansion of the hospital’s emergency department and support services—is currently underway, with an expected completion date of fall 2022. This final project phase includes the renovation of approximately 10,000 square feet in the existing hospital to add 21 emergency department exam rooms, enhanced dietary service, an expanded lab/blood bank, and the renovation of a central processing unit.

“I cannot think of a more impactful contribution to our community right now after the past two years than the expanded access to services that this project provides,” said Dan Peterson, SSRRH’s chief executive officer. “A lot of credit goes to the whole integrated design and construction team for overcoming incredible obstacles throughout the pandemic to see us through to our opening.”

Stantec is helping to deliver the multiphase project through an innovative Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach, alongside general contractor, HerreroBoldt. The IPD model brings together people, systems, business structures, and practices for a collaborative project execution. Sutter Health is a pioneer and industry leader in the deployment of the IPD model.

“Our integrated team worked collaboratively to deliver this new tower on time and in budget,” said Justin Wise, Stantec’s Sacramento-based healthcare architect of record for the project. “The quality care provided by Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital is essential to keeping the growing Sonoma County community healthy, and we’re proud to help them expand their care capacity.”

Stantec’s design services for the SSRRH project include architecture; interiors; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; landscape; acoustics; IT services; and sustainability.

SANTA ROSA, Calif.—After commencing on an expansion project last fall, the Sutter Santa Rosa Hospital has officially topped out its work at the healthcare complex in Northern California, which first opened in 2014.

At an event that was broadcast online on July 30—due to the necessity of social distancing measures—the facility’s ceremonial last structural steel beam was lowered into place. Prior to being set, the beam was signed by members of the construction crew, hospital staff and the hospital’s former CEO, Mike Purvis, who retired in January of this year.

Among the invited virtual guests were Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), whose district encompasses Sonoma County, which is the home of the Sutter Santa Rosa Hospital. Other invited guests included Susan Gorin, who serves as the chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, as well as representatives of general contractor HerreroBOLDT.

“This is no traditional ‘topping out,’” the hospital’s CEO, Dan Peterson, said at the start of the virtual ceremony. “We’re using technology to keep everyone safe, and we’re making history with one of the country’s first virtual topping-out celebrations.”

The $158 million expansion, which added nearly 70,000 square feet of medical use space at the medical facility, broke ground last November. Working with HerreroBOLDT is Stantec, who provided design and architectural services for the project.

Added Supervisor Gorin: “Sutter has been a vital partner to Sonoma County for almost three decades, and this expansion is the embodiment of its continued commitment to the community. This hospital will provide high-quality care to residents in a state-of-the-art, seismically safe and environmentally conscious setting.”

The construction workers at HerreroBOLDT were subjected to extra precautionary measures in the time of covid-19, including the requirement of wearing a mask and practicing social distancing on the jobsite. HerreroBOLDT said this ensured heading off a potential spread of infections; no cases were reported.

The three-story hospital addition adds 40 private patient rooms, 13 outpatient beds and 21 emergency department “bays.” The new space is expected to open for patients in the spring of 2022. A Phase II expansion to the hospital’s existing emergency department will follow, to be completed for the fall of 2022.

“Today healthcare is on all our minds as we face the continued threat of coronavirus pandemic. This facility will expand our ability to deliver quality care no matter the crisis we face—a pandemic, wildfires or earthquakes,” Congressman Thompson said in a statement timed for the event. “I can’t wait to celebrate, hopefully in person, when we cut the ribbon to open the space.”

Added Peterson, the hospital’s current CEO: “Today’s ceremony is a celebration of a momentous achievement for our hospital that will help us serve our patients and our community for generations to come.

“Everyone at Sutter Santa Rosa knows the hard work it’s taken to reach this milestone, and I want to offer a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our team, which has continually served this community with integrity and compassion.”

SANTA ROSA, Calif.—Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital is adding 40 private room beds as well as emergency treatment areas and surgical suites as part of an expansion and renovation project.

The hospital, located on a 25-acre lot adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, currently has 84 beds and a full patient wing. The expansion aims to enhance the hospital’s services as the Santa Rosa area, located an hour north of San Francisco, continues to grow in population.

Design and architecture firm Stantec is taking point on the $158 million project, which will be adding 67,000 square feet of space to host multiple disciplines and specialties.

The hospital first opened in 2014, and the expansion represents the second phase of its overall construction. The second phase of construction entails renovating nearly 11,000 square feet of the existing hospital space so that 24 emergency examination rooms can be included in the overall design. Furthermore, a three-story wing will be added to the east side of the hospital encompassing 40 private-room beds, an endoscopy unit and two operating rooms.

“We have a long history of providing quality, innovative care to our community,” Michael Purvis, CEO of Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital, said in a statement. “This expansion project will enhance our ability to provide coordinated healthcare and help us meet the growing needs of Sonoma County patients for years to come.”

The healthcare facility has photovoltaic panels as part of a commitment to energy efficiency and utilizing as much natural lighting as possible.

Stantec’s work for the expansion includes not only the structure and architecture itself, but also work on the interior of the building and meticulous planning of the facility’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

“It is a privilege to collaborate with one of the nation’s leading not-for-profit healthcare providers on the design and construction of this critical project,” Justin Wise, Stantec’s Sacramento-based healthcare architect of record for the project, said in a statement. “Expanding a healthcare facility just five years after the initial opening indicates the tremendous need in the community. We are excited to see the project come to life.”

Stantec’s collaborators include general contractor HerreroBoldt. The firms’ work on the Santa Rosa hospital is termed an integrated project delivery (IPD), wherein many parties come together on a design project for a collaborative execution.

The Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital expansion is anticipated to see its first patients in 2022.
