GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital celebrated alongside leaders and other associated healthcare partners on March 1 for the grand opening of Health Pointe Clinic, a facility which provides convenient access and coordinated care to patients in northern Ottawa County and the lakeshore region. The opening drew nearly 3,000 people to the two-hour event, stunning both the community and healthcare officials alike.

Nearly four years ago, Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital signed an agreement to seek clinical collaborations, eventually working together to acquire this significant physical presence in the northwestern Ottawa County healthcare market. The opening of the Health Pointe facility marks a major milestone in the committed and long-term relationship between the two organizations, according to Spectrum Health’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tina Freese Decker.

AECOM, with offices in Grand Haven, Mich., served as architect for the $50 million, 103,000-square-foot facility, working closely with the facility owner, as well as Spectrum Health’s planning and design team. Both worked to design a facility that guarantees optimal daylight and warmth in an attempt to develop a more calming atmosphere, helping the administration, patients and physicians to give and receive care in a restful environment. This did, however, become a challenging task considering that the team had to design within the extremely cold weather conditions of Michigan. It needed to withstand extreme cold, and have the ability to maintain warmth and achieve maximum daylight for the comfort of its occupants.

“It’s been scientifically proven that natural light enhances positive health outcomes in patients,” said David Warden, enerGfacade brand manager, YKK AP America Inc.

Initially, the biggest challenge was the curtain wall around the perimeter of the building due to the condensation resistance factor (CRF) requirements. “It is critical for healthcare facilities to reduce or to eliminate the potential condensation forming on non-porous surfaces, such as glazing and framing, to maintain a healthy environment for occupants,” explained Warden. “Studies have shown that viruses thrive in humidity ranges above 55 percent relative humidity and below 30 percent relative humidity. The ideal solution was to choose a curtain wall and sunshade solution that could provide a CRF capable of accommodating recommended humidity levels for healthcare facilities.”

Health Pointe hosts several medical specialists and provides services including primary and urgent care, a lab draw station, surgery center, pediatrics, radiology, endoscopy, orthopedics, general surgery, cardiology, audiology, urology, gastroenterology, colon and rectal surgery, and neurology.

Both Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital officials emphasized their shared mission of expanding local access and providing greater choices for high-quality, affordable healthcare while ensuring their shared commitment to their community.

Health Pointe Executive Director Joshua Troast closed the ribbon cutting by talking about his personal connection to this project. “My family and I are residents of this community, and I cannot even begin to tell you how proud I am to be standing here,” he said in a statement. “As a husband and a father, I want my family to have the opportunity to receive high-quality care close to where we live, work and play.”

DALLAS — On Aug. 20, the Parkland Health and Hospital System opened the doors of a new $1.3 billion facility that replaces the old emergency room, which was built in 1954 and beginning to fall apart. The new facility is double the size of its predecessor and was designed to accommodate the growing population in the Dallas/Fort Worth region.

The hospital finished transferring all of its patients from the old emergency room to the new facility, where private and larger rooms were waiting for them. The move was completed on Aug. 22. This has been a long-awaited project, which was first discussed seven years ago after voters approved a bond package to fund construction.

With the newly finished building, Dallas County received a 2.8 million-square-foot, 826-bed facility on a 64-acre lot. All of the beds are in private rooms that include their own bathroom and space for family and visitors. The facility includes more than $80 million of newly upgraded digital technology. This makes the hospital one of the most advanced facilities currently in the country — a significant upgrade from the old hospital.

The new building, which was designed by locally based HDR + Corgan, is LEED Gold certified. One of its key features is the windows made from low-iron glass. The tinted-gray windows are covered with a digitally printed pattern consisting of donors’ names and outlines of trees. These digital covers also help to beat Texas heat. The windows make the hospital the largest digitally printed glass building in the world.

Parkland Health and Hospital System administrators and decision makers kept the community in mind during design and construction. They used responsible financial strategies to build a state-of-the-art hospital, while creating new local jobs. Responsible spending also allowed the hospital officials to invest money back into the community. Although bond proceeds primarily funded the hospital, it also included $150 million in philanthropic donations and almost $400 million in cash reserves.

DALLAS — BOKA Powell a Dallas-based architecture and interiors firm, has completed design work on the $11.2 million Hatcher Station Health Center, developed by Dallas-based Frazier Revitalization Inc. and operated by Parkland Health and Hospital System, also based in Dallas.

The 44,300-square-foot clinic near Dallas’ Fair Park is located on a seven-acre site adjacent to DART’s Hatcher Station.

“The clinic was designed to efficiently and effectively deliver community health services for adults, geriatrics, women and children in an underserved part of Dallas,” said Sean Kirton, senior project designer for BOKA Powell, in a statement. “This project is a part of the community, and was developed in partnership with the community, offering residents easy access to primary care rather than traveling long distances to the main hospital and sitting in the emergency room.”

With a modern, flexible design, the new facility is anticipated to serve up to 75,000 patients annually. The health center offers basic primary care, behavioral health services, a Women & Infants Specialty Health (WISH) center, a pharmacy, community health and wellness programs, as well as mobile mammography.

The 66 exam rooms feature a flexible equipment setup that allows providers to utilize unoccupied rooms to respond to demand as patient volumes fluctuate throughout the day, reducing wait times and improving efficiency.

“The community’s response to the new clinic has been overwhelming,” said Jane Hunley, interim site administrator at Hatcher Station Health Center. “During the health center’s first week of operation, about 1,500 patients were served by primary care physicians, pathology, radiology, women’s services and patient financial services. These included scheduled appointments, as well as walk-in services. In addition, more than 800 prescriptions were dispensed by the pharmacy.”

Hatcher Station Health Center is located at 4600 Scyene Road (intersection of Scyene and Hatcher) in Dallas. The facility consolidates and replaces Parkland’s former East Dallas Health Center on Live Oak Street. The new clinic meets the City of Dallas’ Green Building guidelines for new construction, ensuring long-term enhanced building performance.

“We’re honored to have partnered with Frazier Revitalization, Inc. and Parkland’s user groups to design this new clinic in an underserved neighborhood of Dallas,” said Don Powell, principal at BOKA Powell. “This project is representative of progress in this community. Its modern, open design is adaptable for multiple uses beyond healthcare, such as community meetings and events.”
