PHILADELPHIA—Jefferson Health recently opened the Honickman Center, now home to over a dozen specialty practices previously scattered throughout 10 buildings.

Stantec, a global integrated design firm, served as the architect of record for fit-out of the building. Stantec partnered with Ennead Architects, the core and shell architect, to help plan the facility for its intended ambulatory care use.

Located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, the $762 million, 462,000-square-foot facility serves as a catalyst for changing the health system’s delivery of care. Virtual and technology strategies augment physical space planning, engaging patients and offering convenience during the pre-arrival stage of care. Valet and concierge services support a seamless arrival experience.

Reimagining care with the support of new technologies allowed the Stantec team to eliminate spaces and streamline processes. Traditional steps along a patient’s journey were eliminated by bringing services to the patient at their point of care. The intake process, which typically requires stopping at an alcove to collect height and weight information, now occurs in the private exam room. Information is automatically transmitted to the patient’s electronic medical record, using smart exam tables.

“By collaborating closely with the care team at Jefferson Health, we were able to create process improvements that enhance the patient experience, staff workflow, and spatial implications,” said Kristy Hollis, principal for Stantec. “We are proud to help create a place where our Philadelphia community can receive the best comprehensive care that supports their health and well-being.”

The Honickman Center includes over 300 exam rooms, 58 infusion chairs, 8 operating rooms, 5 endoscopy rooms, imaging, lab services, and a pharmacy. The tower also features two levels of amenity space available to patients, visitors, and the public. Amenities include a large café, community event space, and a large-scale lounge area. As patients move up to the clinical floors, public spaces are smaller and support a quiet and calm experience. The offering of amenities continues with programs like image recovery and lounge space for cancer patients and access to a rooftop terrace on the 15th floor.

While convenient for patients, this vertical campus proved challenging from a construction logistics standpoint. With only inches between the building perimeter and property line, all construction activity had to occur within the footprint of the building itself. Standardizing the building layout and prototyping exams spaces allowed for more than 300 exam rooms across 10 stories, fully constructed out of prefabricated demountable partitions and a standard kit of parts. This just-in-time strategy resulted in the floors being turned over to Jefferson months quicker than traditional stick-built methods.

An estimated 15-20 percent of the global population is neurodivergent, and design focused on reducing stress in patients must consider the neurodivergent as well as the neurotypical. With the leadership of the Jefferson Center for Autism and Neurodiversity, as well as input from neurodivergent focus groups, Stantec’s designers created a destination that supports a positive care experience for all.

Upon arrival, patients can obtain sensory support kits. Neutral yet warm finishes, free of bold patterns, set a calming and welcoming tone. Waiting spaces provide large- and small-scale seating that integrate tactile elements, soothing motions, or reduction in ambient noise. These areas also include feature walls and dynamic art installations meant to reduce anxiety and provide positive distraction. Glazing is utilized at many of the transitions between environments, allowing patients to anticipate and prepare for what is next in their journey.

DURHAM REGION, Ontario (Can.)—Global integrated design firm Stantec has been selected to provide planning, design, and conformance (PDC) services for Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment project. Stantec’s health team will produce output specifications for the design, new construction, and renovations of the existing facility. Throughout the project duration, Stantec will evaluate conformance to design and construction requirements for the new hospital.

As one of the fastest-growing areas in Ontario, Durham Region is expected to double in population by 2041 and health services need to support the growing community. With more than 51,000 clinical visits last year, Bowmanville Hospital is a full-service community hospital that provides emergency and critical care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, complex continuing care, diabetes education, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, palliative care, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory services. The hospital is also home to the Regional Eye Centre.

The facility will also house new services such as haemodialysis and a wide range of ambulatory care clinics. Expansion space within the redeveloped hospital will allow for future clinical growth requirements over the next 15-20 years.

“We are honored to be part of the team bringing this much-anticipated redevelopment to fruition. In addition to filling gaps in service, it will increase access to health services for the residents of Durham Region,” said Andrew Brimble, principal for Stantec. “Bowmanville Hospital will be transformed into a modernized facility that will support the health and well-being of the community for years to come.”

Infrastructure Ontario is committed to supporting Lakeridge Health’s effort to meet the needs of the region. In addition, the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation announced its ambitious new campaign goal to raise the community share of $110 million. The We Care, We Can campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the foundation’s history, was launched in 2019 to raise funds for the hospital’s redevelopment, expansion, and equipment needs. The Foundation wholeheartedly calls upon the community to support this campaign.

“As the Foundation’s mission gains momentum, it continues to push the boundaries and redefine what’s possible – not just for the present, but for future generations,” said Frank Cerisano, chief executive officer of the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation. “Now is the time for Clarington and the Region to come together as one to support a much-needed project for our community and Durham Region. It’s our responsibility to support our hospital, and to take the necessary steps to ensure we meet our community share.”

Lakeridge Health continues to work with its community to meet its local share needs for the hospital’s expansion.

“Lakeridge Health is thrilled to work with Stantec as the vendor for the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project,” said Cynthia Davis, president and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “Today’s announcement is a major milestone in bringing our vision of a modernized, state-of-the-art hospital to life. No doubt, this project will transform the way we deliver care to patients and families in Clarington and beyond for generations to come. We’re grateful for the support and collaboration of our partners at Infrastructure Ontario, the Municipality of Clarington, the Region of Durham, and our generous donors and community members who are making this project possible.”

Stantec’s focus on design excellence is demonstrated through optimal clinical operations, flexibility, sustainability, and accessibility. The firm has provided PDC and design services for a number of healthcare facilities in Eastern Canada including Trillium Health Partners’ Peter Gilgan Patient Tower, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Phase 1C of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Redevelopment Project, Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s new patient care wing, Anishnawbe Health Toronto Indigenous Community Health Centre, new South Niagara Hospital, Brockville General Hospital’s Donald B. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected to provide design services for the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital, Dubai’s first integrated, comprehensive cancer hospital. Named in honor of the late Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the hospital is scheduled to open to patients in 2026.

The Al Jalila Foundation, which leads the giving mission of Dubai Health, is receiving donations of approximately AED 1.2 billion to be invested in developing the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital.

The 603,000-square-foot hospital will house 50 clinics, 30 clinical trial areas, 60 infusion rooms, 10 urgent care rooms, 5 radiotherapy rooms, and 116 inpatient beds to meet current and future levels of demand. Featuring 19 gardens, green space will be placed throughout the hospital campus, creating a healing space for patients and their families.

Focused on creating a healthy space, the hospital will be designed to LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards from the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing best-in-class building strategies and practices in sustainability. The design will also meet requirements for WELL Building Standards, developed by the International WELL Building Institute.

Stantec is supporting the hospital’s transformative shift in care delivery, moving from a traditional inpatient model to an ambulatory model of care. This includes integrating primary care with diagnosis and treatment to offer detection and intervention at earlier stages of the patient’s journey.

As part of Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, the comprehensive cancer hospital will benefit from a multidisciplinary team, including specialized nursing, offering patients a full spectrum of care services in one location, from early diagnosis to treatment and supportive care. Aligning with Dubai Health’s Patient First promise, select treatments and services will be made available to patients in the comfort of their homes, ensuring an easy and accessible continuum of care.

Research and clinical trials will be at the heart of the hospital, fostering opportunities for discovering the best patient outcomes through personalized, patient-centric, evidence-based care.

“Our design draws inspiration from the Ghaf tree, the UAE’s national tree and a symbol of life, peace, and tolerance. The tree often possesses a twisted geometry, reflected in how the new cancer hospital is composed—lower and raised blocks, gently twisted, and including a large court as a center of gravity and focal point,” said David Martin, global design director for Stantec. “A small grove of Ghaf trees in the square will provide a memorable sense of place and symbolize the rich contribution Hamdan Bin Rashid has made to the health of the community.”

Reflecting the center of life, the new cancer hospital will draw in natural daylight while integrating direct contact with nature for the entire community. The hospital and future phased campus development are centered around promoting the new Hamdan Bin Rashid Square as the heart of a new mini campus, which reduces the institutional feel and destigmatizes the patient experience.

Recent projects designed by Stantec include the Alfred J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Center in Calgary, Alberta; MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center Expansion in Houston, Texas; New York Proton Center in New York, N.Y.; Johns Hopkins Proton Therapy Center in Washington, D.C.; Inova Schar Institute Proton Center in Fairfax, Va.;; Proton International at University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala. and Hefei Ion Medical Center in Hefei, China.

WINDSOR, Ont. (Canada)—Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) has selected global integrated design firm Stantec as the Planning, Design and Conformance (PDC) team for the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital, a single-site acute care facility for the growing communities’ needs. Stantec architects and engineers will support the project through the development of block schematics and indicative design phases, the tendering process, and construction.

Situated on a 60-acre site, the new acute care hospital will span 1.6 million square feet with state-of-the-art Emergency/Trauma Services, Cancer Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Regional Cardiac Services, Critical Care, Medical/Surgical Inpatient Units, Surgical Services, and Outpatient Clinics. The hospital will include increased bed capacity as well as increased capacity in Emergency Services to increase to meet patient needs into the future.

The facilities modern design will give patients and their families more privacy, comfort, and control by providing 100% inpatient patient rooms with the capacity to be private and/or isolation rooms with improved infection prevention control and a modern ventilation system. There will also be increased capacity to support WRH partners in education – including the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Windsor Program – and enhance research and clinical trials. The updated infrastructure will strengthen the ability to recruit and retain physicians, nurses and frontline health professionals and medical leaders.

“This is a significant project milestone. We are thankful for the leadership, input, and support from all who have helped move this project forward including hospital staff, professional staff, patients, their families, the community, planning experts, the government, and elected officials at all levels,” said David Musyj, President & CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital. “We now look forward to working with Stantec to continue to advance the project and ensure we are in good shape to start construction on or before the target date.”

Together with 39 user group teams – comprising hospital leadership, professional staff, and patient and community representatives – Stantec will develop design plans and performance requirements for the new hospital and oversee their adherence throughout the construction period. The firm will work with the WRH User Group Planning Teams, the Project Management Team, and Infrastructure Ontario to position Windsor Regional Hospital for the successful tendering process for a project developer in 2025 and the start of construction in 2027.

”By bringing state-of-the-art tertiary, acute, and community-based health care services to a growing patient population, we are helping establish the new hospital as the cornerstone of the region’s healthcare,” said Tim Eastwood, senior principal for Stantec. “We are honored to be part of a project that solves capacity issues and places the community needs at the center of our efforts.”

Stantec’s work on the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital will begin immediately with the study of the Campus Plan and preparation of the Stage 2B Ministry of Health submission. These early design plans will develop block diagrams, including the overall circulation flows (horizontal and vertical) for all clinical and non-clinical services. The schedule goal is to submit the Stage 2 block diagrams, together with the functional program and an early cost estimate to the Ministry of Health in early 2023 for approval to proceed with the next major phase of this project — the detailed indicative design development and preparation of output specifications.
