MANCHESTER, N.H.—BOND Building Construction recently completed Phase 2 of an extensive 22,000-square-foot renovation and expansion project to Elliot Hospital’s Emergency Department. Steering the design-build effort, BOND Building worked closely and collaboratively with the hospital planning staff, architect, and engineers in a multi-phased approach to ensure seamless execution and negligible interference with the active Emergency Department, which maintained access 24/7 through all phases of construction.

The carefully planned project was executed with zero impact on Elliot’s Emergency Department operations, demonstrating BOND Building’s expertise in managing complex projects while maintaining critical services.

The designers for the project were e4H, Simon Design, Fuss & O’Neill, and BR+A.

Despite facing the challenge of construction starting on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic and a shutdown occurring merely weeks into mobilization, the project team exemplified extraordinary resilience and adaptability. Regrouping in Summer 2020, they undertook a comprehensive reassessment and redesign of project parameters, seamlessly integrating the most current COVID guidelines and incorporating lessons learned.

An investment of $750,000 was dedicated to COVID-related improvements, including installing UV lighting, negative air rooms, and isolated HVAC systems separate from the rest of the hospital. These improvements are based on future Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines that have not been adopted to date.

The successful completion of Phase 2 in 2023 signifies a major milestone in bolstering the capacity and capabilities of Elliot Hospital’s Emergency Department. This renovation and expansion project reflects BOND Building’s proficiency in handling intricate projects, ensuring minimal disruption to essential services, and ultimately enhancing the hospital’s ability to serve the community more effectively.

VALHALLA, N.Y., April 29, 2022—Blythedale Children’s Hospital held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, April 22 to mark the official opening of the new Milton Spahn Therapy Village, as well as a new Simulation Lab and Parent Training Center.

The newly renovated and expanded 5,000-square-foot center for physical and occupational therapy incorporates the latest advances in rehabilitation medicine and state-of-the-art technologies to promote recovery for the more than 170 children, and 50 therapists, who use it daily. The new Simulation Lab comprises high-tech spaces that replicate bedside and home environments where parents learn how to care for their medically fragile child in a supportive, controlled environment, in preparation of their discharge home.

The expansion of these two new spaces was part of a $27 million capital project that began in the fall of 2020. Other facets of “Phase 4” construction include an expanded and modernized pharmacy, administrative office suite, Assistive Technology workshop, and the addition of eight new beds to the Traumatic Brain Injury Unit.

“Since 2009, Blythedale has invested $150 million in facilities, patient care technology, and infrastructure to match the outstanding care provided to medically complex patients and their families,” said Blythedale President & CEO Larry Levine. “Because of our meticulous financial discipline and stewardship, combined with our generous donors, we have been able to completely transform the hospital without incurring significant debt. And to have completed this most recent phase with minimal disruption during a global pandemic speaks volumes about our project partners.”

The project partners include E4H Environments for Health Architecture, and Lendlease, who designed every space of the master facility plan and oversaw all construction, respectively.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate the completion of The Therapy Village and Simulation Lab as our latest project with Blythedale Children’s Hospital, which we have enjoyed a productive partnership with over the last 14 years,” said Richard Steimel, senior vice president and principal in charge, healthcare, at Lendlease. “Construction work in an active health care environment always entails careful planning to minimize disruption, and in this case, with work starting in 2020, we were also implementing extra precautions around COVID that required an added level of coordination and staggered scheduling. That adds to the gratification of completing this project on time and the reward our team feels seeing these innovative spaces now in use, benefitting sick children and the talented BCH staff that care for them.”

“We are so pleased to see the completion of this latest project for Blythedale,” said Jennifer Arbuckle, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Partner at E4H. “We know that every space we work on with Blythedale makes a tremendous difference in the lives of so many families and that inspires us to design spaces that help nurture and heal their patients. We are honored to be part of their team.”

FORT WORTH, Texas—Texas Oncology recently broke ground on a new 22,300-square-foot cancer care center in the Alliance Corridor that will provide medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, and infusion treatments, all in one location. Located at 9750 Hillwood Parkway, at Alliance Town Center, the new Texas Oncology–Keller expects to open in 2022. Once open, patients and their care teams at the existing Texas Oncology–Keller, located on Bourland Road in Keller, will transfer to the new facility at Alliance Town Center.

“Texas Oncology provides leading-edge cancer care where our patients live and work, and this new cancer center will allow us to care for more patients in the growing Alliance Corridor and Keller region,” said R. Steven Paulson, M.D., president and chairman of the board, Texas Oncology. “The development of this new cancer care facility confirms our commitment to providing innovative, comprehensive, and individualized care for patients across Texas.”

In addition to the comprehensive cancer care offered at Texas Oncology–Keller, Texas Breast Specialists–Keller will be on-site and will offer breast surgery services. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 133,730 Texans will be diagnosed with cancer this year, including 20,900 new breast cancer patients.

“As the Alliance Corridor and Keller population continues to grow, access to comprehensive cancer care becomes vitally important,” said Henrik Illum, M.D., medical oncologist, Texas Oncology–Keller. “With a range of specialties and services, and an integrated team of physicians, nurses, and support staff, Texas Oncology–Keller expects to care for more than 100 patients per day.”

Hillwood and Meridian serve as the real estate developers of the project. Corgan and E4H serve as the architects and DPR Construction is the general contractor.

Texas Oncology is an independent private practice with more than 500 physicians and 210 locations across the state.

MANCHESTER, N.H.—BOND Building Construction, Inc. (BOND Building) has officially broken ground on an emergency department expansion project for Elliot Hospital in Manchester. The BOND Building project team and executives celebrated this milestone alongside elected officials, hospital leadership and other healthcare providers at a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, June 18. Speakers included Joyce Craig, Mayor of Manchester, Dr. Greg Baxter, President of Elliot Health System, and Dr. Joseph Guarnaccia, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Elliot Hospital.

“The new ED was designed to accommodate the needs of the growing Greater Manchester community by increasing bed capacity, providing advanced technology, and most importantly, providing increased privacy and safety within the busiest emergency department in the state,” said John Leary, RN, NR-P, TCRN, Director of Emergency Services at Elliot Hospital. “Further, the additional space will improve operational workflows for staff to provide outstanding care and document at the bedside. Our ED team collaborated in all phases of the design process to achieve the highest quality of patient care and safety for those we serve every day.”

BOND Building will provide design-build services for the 22,000-square-foot project. The phased renovation and addition will include three new trauma bays, 32 private rooms, four pediatric exam rooms, and six psychiatric evaluation rooms to treat the nearly 65,000 patients that visit Elliot’s emergency department every year. It will house acute treatment, circulation, nurse station and staff areas, reception and waiting, security, support space, and an X-ray machine.

The project was originally slated to begin last year but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The additional time gave the design-build team an opportunity to redesign the reception, waiting room and triage areas as well as add a rapid treatment area to the floorplan. The modifications will allow the hospital to isolate infectious patients, increase ventilation and air filtration systems, and add additional oxygen ports to care for an increased number of patients, making it better equipped to handle future pandemics.

“We are grateful for the relationship we’ve built with Elliot Health System and value their partnership in delivering this cutting-edge project,” said Mike Walsh, Vice President of Healthcare & Life Sciences at BOND Building. “The emergency department expansion will ensure that Elliot is better equipped to provide outstanding care to its patients, and we’re proud to be working towards this vision.”

The designers for the project are e4H, Simon Design, Fuss & O’Neil and BR+A. The first phase, expected to be completed in February 2022, will include construction of the new building and moving reception, triage, and rapid triages areas into it. Phase two will include moving the rest of the emergency department and services into the building. The full project is expected to be completed in early 2023.
