SUN CITY, Ariz.—General contractor McCarthy Building Companies has finished construction of the new emergency department at the Banner Boswell Medical Center, located in Phoenix’s northwestern suburbs. The new 40,000-square-foot center began accepting patients in October.

The emergency department increased the medical center’s capacity from 42 to 56 beds, which the hospital estimated would translate into being able to care for 60,000 extra patients per year.

The emergency center is just one piece of a $106 million expansion to the Banner Boswell Medical Center, which also entails a 322,000-square-foot patient tower being built from the ground up. The first floor of that patient tower is scheduled to be online in the early part of 2021, and will entail the admitting desk, chapel as well as retail space and a gift shop. Five floors above the lobby level will be reserved specifically for inpatient rooms to be opened at a future date.

McCarthy maintains they were able to save both time and money by prefabricating 625 wall panels for the Banner Boswell project prior to delivery to the jobsite—which also was undertaken for safety reasons so as to allow for social distancing measures in the coronavirus pandemic. Every panel was 8 feet tall by 30 feet wide, and the weight of each panel was over a ton. More than 100 of the prefabricated panels were placed on the medical facility’s interior alone.

McCarthy estimates this prefabrication saved three months in the ultimate timeline of construction work.

“We knew it was critical for Banner Boswell to open early and in time for the busy fall and winter season, and we’re thrilled to meet that goal,” Chris Nickle, executive vice president of McCarthy Building Companies, said in a recent statement.

McCarthy worked on the medical facility alongside designer HMC Architects.

“We are thrilled about the extra capacity that will serve the growing needs of the community for generations to come,” Sharon Lind, CEO of Banner Boswell Medical Center, said in a recent statement. “This new ED and patient tower lobby will truly transform our Boswell campus and create a welcoming experience.”

PHOENIXScottsdale-based healthcare provider HonorHealth this week topped out its newest Phoenix-area hospital, the three-story HonorHealth Sonoran Health and Emergency Center on the northern side of the Arizona capital city. It is the sixth such facility in the Phoenix area for HonorHealth.

The event Wednesday was attended by civic leaders, healthcare workers and other members of the community. The topping out marks the last construction milestone HonorHealth needs to hit before officially completing work on the three-story structure.

McCarthy Building Companies is the general contractor on the project, while Devenney Group Architects is leading the design elements; CBRE is construction manager.

“Today marks another step forward in HonorHealth’s century-long legacy of improving the health and well-being of patients in our communities,” HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte said at the ceremony. “With the opening of this new hospital, we are able to extend our reach and provide North Phoenix and Anthem residents with access to award-winning, comprehensive care that’s close to home.”

The 210,000-square-foot Sonoran Health and Emergency Center will feature a 24-hour emergency center and 40 beds at the outset, with the future option to expand to 80 down the line. The care center’s specialized facilities will include minimally invasive orthopedic and spine services as well as a state-of-the-art surgical unit.

Additionally, it will offer a Level II neonatal intensive care unit and comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care. HonorHealth has announced that even prior to the hospital’s official opening later next year, the company will begin taking gynecological and cardiovascular patients at buildings adjacent to the future hospital’s site.

Furthermore, the older facility itself isn’t being completely torn down but rather is being repurposed as a new outpatient center. The center will include a breast health facility and medical imaging services. Also, a new ambulatory surgery center will offer same-day surgical services and will also entail offices for obstetrics, pediatrics and general surgery physicians.

HonorHealth, a nonprofit organization, currently serves over 1.6 million patients in the greater Phoenix area at its acute-care hospitals in addition to a large medical network, cancer care centers and community services. The company boasts some 12,300 employees, 3,700 affiliated physicians and 3,100 volunteers. HonorHealth was born when Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln Health Network formed a joint venture together in March 2015.

The $170 million HonorHealth Sonoran Health and Emergency Center, to be located at Dove Valley Road and Interstate 17, broke ground in December. At that time, HonorHealth CEO-Hospitals and Chief Clinical Officer Kim Post said that the new hospital would represent “HonorHealth’s commitment to improve the health and well-being of patients in the fast-growing communities of north Phoenix and Anthem. We’ll provide comprehensive care that’s close to home,” she said.

HonorHealth Sonoran Health and Emergency Center is slated to open its doors in September of 2020. When the facility opens, it is expected to bring some 200 jobs to this north Phoenix community.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Banner-University Medical Center (UMC) in Tucson celebrated the topping out of its new hospital tower on Jan. 18. The celebration had UMC staff, Tucson community members and the construction crew in attendance, while they witnessed construction workers hoisting the final beam of the future medical tower.

The architects on the project are Shepley Bulfinch in Phoenix and GLHN Architects & Engineers in Tucson. The construction contractor was a joint venture (Sundt|DPR, A Joint Venture) between Sundt Construction in Tucson and DPR Construction located in Phoenix. This was the seventh joint venture partnership for Sundt and DPR Construction. The whole team broke ground on the tower in May 2016, according to a recent statement, while completion is currently slated for 2019.

The budget for this 670,000-square-foot project and renovations on the existing 75,000-square-foot facility is $400 million, with $50 million of that going to new patient care equipment and computers for state-of-the-art care. The new tower will be nine stories tall, and will have a new main entryway, new cafeteria and support departments on the first floor, according to a statement.

There will be new diagnostic imaging, diagnostic cardiology, cardiac cath labs and interventional radiology on the second floor. The tower will also include new operating rooms and patient prep and recovery space on the third floor, 204 new patient rooms on floors five through nine, and women and infant services on the fifth floor, with more medical and surgical and ICU beds on floors six through eight. The ninth floor will have more medical and surgical beds in addition to 24 more patient rooms.

The placement of this final piece of the tower marks that the uppermost structural framing of the new tower is ready to be set and that the structure has reached its maximum height. While the new tower is currently in its metal “skeleton” form of what it will eventually become, it is scheduled to open for services in spring 2019.
