WAUKEE, Iowa—On February 21, 2024, RDG Planning & Design joined The Iowa Clinic to celebrate the official opening of the healthcare institution’s latest facility. The new facility continues a partnership between RDG and The Iowa Clinic, following collaborations on several local clinics in surrounding communities, including Grimes, Adel, the North Waukee – Alice’s Road dermatology clinic and a new specialty infusion center in West Des Moines.

Strategically located in Waukee, Iowa’s Kettlestone development along Grand Prairie Parkway, RDG’s design for this forward-thinking project introduces a unique blend of clinical services, ambulatory surgery and Iowa’s first outpatient cardiac catheterization lab under one roof, setting a new standard for patient care in Iowa.

“This project embodies The Iowa Clinic’s commitment to providing the best possible patient care. We’re deeply proud to help bring to life a facility that meets the comprehensive needs of today’s healthcare landscape and also anticipates the demands of tomorrow,” said RDG Interior Designer and Senior Partner Leann Pederson, IIDA, CHID, LEED AP.

Design for the clinic encompasses approximately 56,000 square feet of space, including a 35,000-square-foot medical office building and a 21,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center. Designed for expansion, the center aims to adapt to the growing health needs of Waukee’s residents, offering services ranging from urgent care and imaging to family medicine, orthopedics and pediatrics. RDG provided architecture and interior design services in collaboration with Ryan Companies (contractor), Shive-Hattery (civil engineering) and Raker Rhodes (structural engineering).

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—With more than 56,000 low-income South Minneapolis residents in need of healthcare and social services, Southside Community Health Services is committed to expanding its offerings and reach with the construction of its new clinic, One Southside. The health care provider recently signed a ground lease with Ryan Companies US, Inc. at 1010 East Lake Street in Minneapolis, just east of the Midtown Global Market. Ryan Companies US, Inc. owns the land and will build the new 30,000-square-foot clinic.

“Our current facilities don’t allow us to reach the thousands more in need and do not live up to the award-winning quality of care that Southside provides and that our patients deserve,” said Ann Cazaban, executive director of Southside Community Health Services. “More than 40 percent of Southside’s patients were uninsured last year, clearly indicating a need for clinics like One Southside.”

One Southside will allow the organization to grow its patient base, expand services, extend hours of operation and deliver all of its services under one roof to better meet the healthcare needs of patients and the community. The new facility will also include a diagnostic laboratory, mammography suite and bring Southside’s administrative offices into the new space. Southside is currently operating between two different buildings located one mile apart.

“The expansion of Southside goes beyond the enhancement of its services and reach,” said Maureen Michalski, vice president of real estate development, Ryan Companies. “This project also represents local investment, economic development and job growth in a prominent community-focused commercial node that will benefit meaningfully from these resources.”

To date, Southside has received grants from the following organizations: Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), K.A.H.R Foundation, Mackenzie Scott’s Yield Giving fund, Mainstreet Revitalization, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization and the Restore-Rebuild-Reimagine Fund. The healthcare and social services provider is still seeking financial support from federal, state and local governments to build its new facility, as well as corporate, foundation and individual investments. Southside has requested $10 million from the state.

Designing One Southside is 4RM+ULA as the architect of record and Perkins&Will as the clinic architect with Zuri3 Construction as the construction manager and Classic Lake Consulting as Southside’s representative. Construction is estimated to begin mid-2024 and completed by mid-2025.

Ryan has played a major role in the Midtown area of Minneapolis, where the new Southside clinic will be built. The commercial estate services company was awarded the redevelopment of the Midtown Exchange by the City of Minneapolis in 2004. Ryan partnered with community leaders, business leaders and the city to create a vision that solidified the connection between the Midtown Greenway, Lake Street and Chicago Avenue. Ryan has owned and managed the Midtown Exchange since 2006.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn.—After breaking ground in August 2022, Ryan Companies US, Inc. announces the completion of PrairieCare’s youth and young adult psychiatric inpatient hospital expansion. The project finished three weeks ahead of schedule.

“We remain in a national mental health crisis that is disproportionately affecting youth, and this much needed expansion will address the critical needs of hundreds of families in Minnesota each year,” said Todd Archbold, CEO of PrairieCare. “PrairieCare was proud to partner with Ryan Companies on another successful project, completed ahead of schedule in response to the increased demand for inpatient psychiatric care.”

The nearly 30,000-square-foot expansion includes an additional 30 inpatient beds, activity and therapy spaces, allowing PrairieCare to serve an additional 1,000 youth and young adults each year. This marks the largest increase of psychiatric beds for youth in the state in decades. The newly expanded hospital is adjacent to 610 Medical Center, the two-story medical office building which houses PrairieCare, PrairieCare Medical Group, and the PrairieCare Foundation. 610 Medical Center was developed and built by Ryan, and designed by Ryan A+E, Inc.

“More than six years after celebrating the grand opening of 610 Medical Center with PrairieCare, we are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating again with their new, inpatient expansion,” said Tony Barranco, North region president, Ryan Companies. “The impact these additional beds will have for Minnesota youth and young adults will be profound and, we are so proud to be part of this fantastic project.”

The grand opening ceremony took place Sept. 20, which included a ribbon cutting and tour.

Ryan built the expansion. Pope Architects served as the architect and interior designer for the project.

The PrairieCare expansion marks more than 1,000,000 square feet built by Ryan in Brooklyn Park since 2016. Other projects Ryan constructed in the area include Kurita Water Industries and 610 Zane East & West.

Founded in 1938, has grown to nearly 2,000 team members in 17 offices and has completed projects in almost every state.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Construction of a Class A, multi-tenant medical office building is underway at One Scottsdale. Ryan Companies US, Inc. is developing, designing, and building One Scottsdale Medical, which will be located near the Loop 101 freeway, at Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway. The two-story 101,136-rentable-square-foot building is 80% preleased with two national health systems, City of Hope and Exalt Health as the anchor tenants. The remaining 20,000 square feet is available for lease on the ground floor for additional medical tenants.

“With continued population growth occurring in the North Scottsdale market and additional medical projects slated in the area, One Scottsdale Medical will serve as a premier destination for first class healthcare,” said Jaime Northam, vice president of healthcare development, Ryan Companies. “The project’s accessibility and proximity to the additional amenities of One Scottsdale will greatly benefit community members and healthcare providers.”

City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S. and one of the leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses, will occupy approximately 30,000 rentable square feet on the first floor. The new Scottsdale location will expand City of Hope’s footprint in Arizona, joining City of Hope Phoenix, a comprehensive cancer hospital in Goodyear; outpatient care clinics in North Phoenix and Gilbert; and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), a Phoenix-based affiliate of City of Hope and nonprofit medical research institute dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life-changing results.

“As a budding medical hub, Scottsdale is full of opportunity – for patients and healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Kevin Tulipana, president, City of Hope Phoenix. “As part of this landscape, we are excited to advance our mission to connect more patients, families and communities to leading-edge research, treatment and care.”

Additionally, Exalt Health, based in Texas, will occupy approximately 50,000 square feet, and will be located on the second floor. Exalt Health will offer post-acute care rehabilitation services.

One Scottsdale Medical is located immediately north of the Loop 101 and is surrounded by three area hospitals, including HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center, which is located across the street from the building. It will also have quick access to other features of One Scottsdale including retail, restaurants, a hotel, and residential developments. The building will include unique design elements such as 16’ floor-to-floor heights, a grand main lobby entrance, and two covered drop-off/pick-up canopies.

One Scottsdale Medical is expected to be completed by Q3 2024. Mari Lederman and Katie McIntyre from the Phoenix office of JLL are the project’s exclusive leasing brokers.

One Scottsdale is a 120-acre mixed-use development located in Scottsdale, Ariz. The development will include 2.86 million square feet of space for commercial tenants, 2,000 residential units, and 400 hotel rooms. Ryan Companies recently acquired the land from One Scottsdale Core, which was represented in the transaction by Brad Anderson and Mike Strittmatter with Cushman & Wakefield.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—Ryan Companies US, Inc. and Mercy Cedar Rapids have announced the groundbreaking of The Heart Center at Mercy. The 72,000-square-foot building will merge cardiovascular services under one roof in a convenient and accessible setting for patients and caregivers.

“Our longstanding relationship with Mercy allowed us to dig deep and understand their goals in creating a state-of-the-art outpatient specialty center,” said Mike McMahan, senior vice president of healthcare, Ryan Companies. “Mercy’s vision of enhancing accessibility to preventative resources and care through this new facility will, no doubt, elevate its status of being a leader in heart health.”

As the designer and builder of The Heart Center at Mercy, Ryan translated Mercy’s vision of a heart center for the future into a design integrating elements of health within a modern clinical setting. The building smoothly blends into the surrounding community, while a skybridge connects the center to the main hospital. Plans for The Heart Center also include space for increased screenings and detection services, as well as community education spaces for CPR, defibrillator training and similar programming.

“We are laser-focused on continuing to positively change the landscape of heart care within the communities we serve,” said Tim Charles, Mercy president and CEO. “Throughout the course of many years, Mercy has been successful in establishing the area’s leading heart program. With the growth we’ve experienced, now is the time for this next step as we combine our efforts into a new heart center and bring our resources under one roof.”

The facility was designed for vertical expansion, which can include the addition of electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization labs and surgical suites, which are currently housed in the main hospital.

Construction will begin this fall and is expected to be completed in mid-2023.

CLARK, N.J. – SurroundHealth was named one of the top three sites of 2011 in the Social Media and Community Site category by Kentico, a Nashua, N.H.-based content management system provider, out of 193 other websites built using the Kentico platform.

SurroundHealth, an online community of health educators and healthcare professionals, was developed by HealthEd Academy, a Clark, N.J.-based division of HealthEd dedicated to fostering research and development in health education that targets health professionals in the trenches of patient education and health education.

The site provides best practices information, industry news, job openings, discussion opportunities, research opportunities, resources and links.

The site is not limited to any specific discipline, making it unique, says SurroundHealth Community Leader Susan Eno Collins.

“This community is multiple disciplines and people come together to focus on areas and issues that are challenges within health – things like health literacy, cultural humility and cultural competence, the use of technology in patient education and health education,” she said. “The things that help keep people on the cutting edge of that is really where the community is at.”

Although SurroundHealth counts physicians among its members, it particularly targets “health extenders” such as diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, registered dieticians and health educators.

“We also have people from within public health and that gives us the perspective of people who are working deep within communities on areas of prevention, so you get really the spectrum of perspective and expertise sharing,” she said.

The site launched in April 2011 and has experienced month-over-month growth of 40 percent on average since then, says Collins. Grassroots promotion through LinkedIn, Twitter and appropriate health professional conferences has fueled interest, and by taking a look at growth services like Upleap or gramista at some point in the near future, it won’t be long until the same level of interest could be sparked through Instagram too. Membership comes from 40 countries and will reach 1,000 this month.

Future plans call for membership growth and expanding ways people can engage in sharing the aggregation or content creation. SurroundHealth is looking to expand engagement around resources of interest and topics of interest so the site becomes a way to quickly get to the needed information and best practice approaches.

“We are trying to fulfill that need of a place to share and have discussions and forums, but also a place to help organize around areas of issues and really organize both the resources as well as the information,” Collins said.
