CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—Oman-Gibson Associates (OGA), a full-service health care real estate firm based in Nashville, recently broke ground on an orthopaedic office building complex for Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance (TOA) in Clarksville. The new 27,750-square-foot medical office building will be located on a 6.81-acre site off I-24 Exit 11 at 1000 S. Gateway Blvd. and is a relocation of the physician group’s Clarksville offices, currently located at 141 Hillcrest Drive in Clarksville.

In addition to physician office space, the new facility will feature an even more robust catalog of orthopaedic services, including urgent care, advanced imaging, a larger physical therapy facility, and a sports performance facility that includes an outdoor artificial turf area.  The new facility is expected to be completed by late 2024.

“The Clarksville community is growing quickly, and TOA’s new state-of-the-art facility, with enhanced clinic, physical therapy, imaging services, and specialized orthopedic urgent care, will meet that need,” said Rob Simmons, Chief Executive Officer of TOA. “In addition to these enhanced services, we will also become a stronger resource for the community with our sports performance programming. For more than 90 years, TOA has been at the forefront of orthopedics. This facility demonstrates our commitment to support the communities we serve with a comprehensive approach to support active lifestyles.”

“We’re grateful for our years-long partnership with TOA and their trust in us to bring their vision to life,” said Bond Oman, OGA chief executive officer. “The new Clarksville complex exemplifies our commitment to providing cutting-edge medical spaces that cater to the evolving needs of both providers and patients, and we look forward to realizing this vision with TOA.”

OGA has completed multiple developments for TOA, the most recent being a 55,000-square-foot orthopedic medical office building and ambulatory surgery center in Murfreesboro, TN.

Brasfield & Gorrie is serving as general contractor, Earl Swensson Associates is the project’s architectural firm, and the civil engineer is Fulmer Lucas Engineering.

Currently, OGA has 225,000 square feet of medical real estate under development in the Nashville MSA and more than 500,000 square feet in current projects and deals in progress around the country.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Brasfield & Gorrie and Baptist Health Care celebrated the topping out of the new Baptist Health Care campus currently under construction at I-110 and Brent Lane Feb. 24.

The topping out of a new construction project is a major milestone in the building process that occurs when the structure reaches its full height and the last piece of structure, often a steel beam, is put in place. It signifies the completion of the framework of the building.

Baptist Health Care leaders and other special guests joined Brasfield & Gorrie leaders and nearly 1,000 construction crew members on site for a brief program that recognized the significance of the day and celebrated the accomplishment. Following the program, guests watched as the last steel beam was lifted by crane to the top of the new acute care hospital and set into place. The beam was signed by team members, volunteers, visitors, construction workers and others.

The new $636 million Baptist Health Care campus represents the largest investment in a health care facility in Northwest Florida history. This new 57-acre centrally located campus is designed to be a calm, peaceful, patient- centered environment of care for those we serve. It includes a 10-story acute care hospital, the six-story Bear Family Foundation Health Center and a freestanding behavioral health unit. An innovative, convenient, safe and compassionate place to provide and receive care, the new campus will incorporate modern efficiencies in a healing environment that prioritizes patient experience and safety; quality and efficiency; technology integration; flexible and adaptable areas with room for growth; healthy, sustainable buildings; and beautiful settings.

The new Baptist Health Care campus is expected to open in fall 2023.

AUSTIN—General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie has been awarded the construction contract for an expansion of HCA St. David’s North Austin Medical Center Women’s Center. The company has also started work on a one-story vertical expansion at HCA St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. The projects are the first the general contractor has built in Austin.

“Brasfield & Gorrie is dedicated to building strong communities, and we’ve been hard at work in Texas for 30 years,” said Vice President and Division Manager Chris Wall. “We’re honored to extend our long relationship with HCA Healthcare into Austin, expanding a facility that cares for the city’s rapidly growing population.”

The Women’s Center four-story vertical expansion project will consist of a 166,369-square-foot addition, including 4 C-section operating rooms, 36 labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms and 24 antepartum rooms. Following the completion of the vertical expansion, Brasfield & Gorrie will renovate 28,325 square feet of interior space, adding 30 neonatal intensive care unit beds and 32 full-term nursery beds and 4 post-partum rooms.

The North Austin Medical Center project will add 21,214 square feet and 32 medical surgery patient rooms. It will include prefabricated exterior wall panels and bathroom pods. With prefabrication, off-site work can run concurrently with activities on site. Less work is contingent on weather conditions or material delivery lead times, which is an advantage for maintaining project schedules. Minimizing the number of workers on site also increases safety.

Earl Swensson Associates is the architect on both projects. The one-story vertical expansion at HCA St. David’s North Austin Medical Center is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2022. The Women’s Center four-story vertical expansion is scheduled for completion during the fourth quarter of 2023.

PENSACOLA, Fla.—With the coronavirus canceling most groundbreaking events for new healthcare construction, many such ceremonies have gone virtual, including one for a health campus now underway in Florida’s Panhandle.

In early November, construction officially started for Baptist Health Care’s new health campus, which is valued at $615 million and will be situated on a parcel of land encompassing 57 acres.  The new healthcare center will entail a 602,000-square-feet hospital that will have 264 beds spread out over 10 floors.  The beds will be spread out for various levels of care, including ICU, labor and delivery, and medical/surgery.  Specialized areas will be devoted to Level II trauma care, triage, specialty cardiac care as well as a dedicated surgery and operations department.

Another part of the campus will be home to the Multispecialty Health Center, a six-floor, 178,000-square-foot complex that will offer 162 examination rooms as well as spaces for oncology, women’s health, bariatrics, surgery pre-optimization, cardiology and wound care.

In addition to the healthcare facilities, the campus will also offer dedicated walking paths, a chapel and “healing garden,” cafeteria and coffee shop, room for outdoor classes and rehabilitation areas.  Future space is likely to be set up for a dine-in restaurant.

The health campus project was announced in the summer of 2019, and has continued during the pandemic with such job requirements as securing financing, and initial site preparation and design planning.

Design and construction firms have also been tapped by BHC for the project.  These include architectural firm Gresham Smith, program manager Meadows & Ohly and equipment and technology planner Smith Seckman and Reid.

Brasfield & Gorrie, whose home office is located in Birmingham, Ala., has been tapped to work as the new health campus’s general contractor.  In a statement emailed to HCO News, Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Susan Stabler said that healthcare is essential to any community, and her firm believes in making such ties between people and healthcare stronger.

“We are honored to partner with Baptist Health Care in their mission to provide the people of Northwest Florida and South Alabama with world-class care,” Stabler said.

Due to the safety concerns surrounding holding a live groundbreaking ceremony, instead the event was broadcast on Facebook Live and YouTube on Nov. 3, 71 years to the day that Baptist Hospital, the crown jewel in BNC’s portfolio, first opened.

“This new health campus will serve our region now and for generations to come,” BHC president and CEO Mark Faulkner said in a statement during the groundbreaking.  “Our founders’ bold vision led to generations of quality care for our community.

“This transformational project will allow us to continue providing patient-centered care in a setting that offers the opportunity to evolve and adapt as the needs of our community change for generations to come.”

The campus itself is expected to be completed sometime in 2023.

JACKSON, Miss.—This fall saw the unveiling of the new Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower, an addition to the Children’s of Mississippi healthcare system located on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. A limited-attendance ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Oct. 13, with the event also live-streamed online.

The Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower offers 32 private pediatric ICU rooms, 88 neonatal intensive care rooms, a dozen surgical suites, as well as an imaging center and outpatient specialty clinic, both of which have been designed specifically to accommodate children’s care needs.

According to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the namesake of the new tower was revealed only in September, not long prior to completion. The Sandersons chaired a fundraising campaign for the new tower that has already netted in some $83 million—including a $10 million gift from the couple’s personal fortune. (Other donors include recently retired NFL quarterback Eli Manning, who with his wife gave $1 million to the project.)

In a statement regarding the Sandersons, Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, maintained that without the couple’s hard work and generosity, the project would likely never have even gotten off the ground. Woodward called the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower a “fitting name” for the structure.

The new tower complements the previously completed, seven-story Blair E. Batson Tower at Children’s of Mississippi, which increased the hospital’s outpatient capacity by 40 percent. (That tower was named in honor of Blair E. Batson, who was UMMC’s first pediatrics chair.) Together, the two towers encompass the Magnolia State’s only hospital devoted specifically to pediatric care.

Brasfield & Gorrie, based in Birmingham, Ala., served as the general contractor for both the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower as well as the Blair E. Batson Tower. In a recent statement about the expansion, Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Ed Hauser expressed pride in his firm for continuing on the healthcare project safely in the middle of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“This has been a challenging year for the world as we adopt new safety protocols in our daily lives and adapt to new ways of living and doing business,” Hauser said, adding that his firm, in combination with the university, tackled those challenges head-on. “Due to their extraordinary efforts, construction continued to progress, bringing this much-needed facility to fruition in order to provide best-in-class care for the children of Mississippi.”

Both the current and former governors of Mississippi attended the ribbon-cutting virtually. The new tower officially opened its doors for patients on Nov. 2.

“This pediatric expansion will increase access to the state’s only academic medical center, and the new parking deck will help ensure that families’ hospital visits are smooth,” said Hauser of Brasfield & Gorrie, adding that his firm enjoys a long-tenured working relationship with the University of Mississippi Medical Center. “We are thankful for their partnership as we work to bring their vision to reality,” he said.

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Healthcare contractor Brasfield & Gorrie has announced that the firm has delivered to client Cone Health the brand-new Cone Health Women’s and Children’s Center, which is located at the Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The project was completed six months ahead of schedule, which saved all concerned some $25 million in expenses from the original projected budget.

Over six floors in the new medical facility, the $100 million Cone Health Women’s and Children’s Center features 197,000 square feet of medical use space, which will be utilized specifically for female and younger patients.

Brasfield & Gorrie said the scheduled delivery was sped up thanks to the contractor’s application of an integrated project delivery (IPD) contract, which improved design efficiency. In a case study released by the firm, Brasfield & Gorrie said that the Cone Health Women’s and Children’s Center presented an opportunity to utilize IPD principles in a unique healthcare setting.

“Cone Health believes innovation is essential for the healthcare industry to thrive, and they recognized the potential for IPD to succeed based on teams who would change their approach to traditional construction roles and processes,” Brasfield & Gorrie said in their study, adding that the fostering of trusting relationships between the various firms—which worked together in the past—paved the way for a successful collaboration.

Furthermore, Brasfield & Gorrie utilized “Lean practices” on the project as a way to reduce costs while simultaneously increasing schedule efficiency—but without sacrificing quality as a result. An example of this was selecting the chilled beams for the project; they had already been used on the adjoining Cone Health’s Moses Cone Memorial North Tower, and thus their efficacy had already been proven.

“With $3.5 million of profit at risk, the team constantly challenged the status quo, assessing ways to innovate and build more efficiently while maintaining high quality standards,” the case study summarized.

The team was also able to save money thanks to the project electrician setting up the new power system with prefabricated racks. Furthermore, running the piping for the MEP systems in a straight line versus offsetting them also saved an additional $1.2 million, according to the study.

Senior Project Manager Dan Cassell said that an IPD contract allows for greater efficiency of task division and time utilization by the individual players.

“A task might cost one partner more, but if it creates overall savings for the team, then everyone—including that partner—benefits,” Cassell said in a statement emailed to HCO News. “We’re grateful that Cone Health chose this innovative method, and we’re thankful for our partners.

“Strong relationships are essential for IPD’s success, and this team was extraordinary.”

General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie, which was founded in 1964, worked on the Cone Health Women’s and Children’s Center in conjunction with architect HKS, Inc. Brasfield & Gorrie employs 3,000 people at 12 offices, and reported 2019 revenues of $3.8 billion
