MIAMI—Skanska USA has signed an initial contract for $90 million (and the total project cost is expected to be $300 million upon completion) for the renovation and expansion of one of the emergency departments at Jackson Health System –one of the country’s leading and largest public health systems, located in Miami, Fla. The healthcare renovation and expansion will encompass the demolition of two buildings to create additional space as part of the planned expansion, which will triple the size of the healthcare system’s flagship emergency department at Jackson Memorial Hospital

Situated in the heart of the Miami Health District, the nonprofit academic medical hospital, Jackson Memorial receives an average of 120,000 emergency department patient visits annually. Designed by the award-winning global architecture firm HKS, the approximately 130,000-square-foot expansion in the busiest emergency department within Miami-Dade County will include 207 new rooms, inclusive of 50 observation rooms and seven patient rooms.

“As a leader in healthcare construction in Florida, Skanska has built a strong partnership with Jackson delivering several healthcare construction projects in the past. This project will be critical to serving the growing healthcare needs of the Miami community,” said Bob Kramer, Vice President and Account Manager for Skanska’s Florida building operations. “We hope the emergency department renovation and expansion will have a lasting impact in helping to provide medical services to residents and visitors who rely on Jackson Health for life-saving procedures and world-class health care.”

The construction work will also encompass the relocation and installation of underground utilities to support the larger medical building. The Jackson project will enable the expanding health system to triage patients faster and reduce wait times to better serve its growing patient population in South Florida. The new emergency department expansion is expected to be delivered in 2025, while the renovation to the existing emergency department totaling about 45,000 square feet will be completed in 2027.

With a trajectory building transformative and innovative healthcare projects across Florida, Skanska also delivered the Jackson Project D – Floor Modernizations project at Jackson in 2019. Additionally, the construction company previously completed the state-of-the-art medical facility Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute in Downtown Orlando; the expansion and renovation of the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers; and the renovation of the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health.

ROCKY MOUNT, Va.—Global construction and development firm Skanska USA has been selected to provide renovation and expansion services for Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. Located at 390 S Main St., Rocky Mount, Va., the effort will include adding two new procedure rooms and providing two updated operating rooms to help the hospital meet patient needs and provide more services.

“This renovation will expand expert care offerings close to home for our community,” said Carl Cline, vice president and administrator of Franklin Memorial Hospital. “We are so excited to work with Skanska to complete these innovative improvements and meet our area’s evolving health needs.”

The 5,230-square-foot, two-story addition will double the hospital’s operating room footprint, providing space for more complex procedures. The renovations of existing pre- and post-operation recovery rooms, sterile processing zones, and pharmacy and compounding lab, will enhance the hospitals current services. The project will be completed in three separate phases to allow existing hospital operations to continue uninterrupted.

“This project will advance Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital’s mission to improve the health of the communities that it serves,” said Greg Peele, executive vice president responsible for Skanska’s North Carolina and Virginia building operations. “The additions and alterations will further enhance the experience of its patients and staff, and allow for greater care of life, a core principle Skanska strives to achieve in our work.”

The renovation and expansion officially kicked off in April 2021 and are projected to be complete by April 2023.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Skanska USA and ACAI Associates, Inc. of Fort Lauderdale officially completed the $27.5 million renovation of Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center.

The multi-phase project renovated both inpatient and outpatient areas in various pediatric units across the hospital. 30 new, state-of-the-art private rooms were added in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), granting the NICU a total bed capacity of 63.

According to Skanska, the new private rooms were designed following NICU guidelines and keeping current and future hospital needs in mind, while creating more space for patients, their families and hospital staff.

A total of 12 beds were added to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, 20 to the Pediatric Step-down Units, and 12 more beds were installed in the Oncology and Hematology departments.

“For the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center project, our overall goal was to provide a state-of-the-art, fully private children’s hospital expansion, that would include newly renovated units such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), hematology and oncology areas, and more,” said Nelmarie Bowe, senior project manager, Skanska USA Building.

Bowe continued stating that the fully private children’s hospital was created so physicians could provide the best care to the smallest patients. The entire process, from design and pre-construction, was completed always with the patient in mind.

One of the main design elements incorporated in the project was the use of the continuous nautical theme throughout the hospital, allowing everyone from patients and staff, to family members and visitors to be able to identify where you were, and specifically what parts encompassed the children’s hospital.

“The idea was to be keep the design family oriented so that physicians and staff could provide family centered care that would help with the healing process,” said Bowe.

The NICU renovations included pre-fabricated headwalls that incorporated an abundance of medical gases, allowing the hospital to increase capacity if needed for emergency situations.

Also specific to the NICU was the addition of play areas designed for patients’ siblings, for families who may have more than one child already.

In the PICU and hematology areas, where patients typically spend longer periods of time, there are also playrooms for patients so they can enjoy some time out of their rooms.

The hospital staff was also kept in mind as the newly renovated staff lounges allow the team to step away and refresh to be able to provide the best level of care.

The hospital installed updated biomedical systems that allow the physicians and nurses to track the status of all patients throughout entire unit. Specifically in the NICU, physicians and staff can now monitor labor and birth (L&B) deliveries at all times so they can monitor an influx of patients by tracking at-risk pregnancies. This then allows them to better plan for new patients and keep a better schedule.

During construction, the hospital remained fully operational while also using Skanska’s proprietary InSite Monitor app that tracks noise, vibration, dust, and differential pressure in spaces where we were performing construction work, allowing the team to monitor health and safety conditions throughout the whole project so the work would not affect patient care.

The renovation began in 2015 and was completed in August 2018.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A ribbon-cutting was held at the University of Florida (UF) Health Cancer Center’s Circle of Hope on Nov 2. Hundreds gathered to hear the dedication for the new UF Health Heart and Vascular Hospital and the new UF Health Neuromedicine Hospital that will meet an increasing need for specialized care.

The new 500,000-square-foot complex had a budget of $425 million. Madison, Wis.-headquartered Flad & Associates was the architect on the project, and the hospital selected Skanska USA, headquartered in Parsippany-Troy Hills, N.J., to do the construction work. The building’s engineering firm was Affiliated Engineers Inc. from its local Gainesville office. UF Health began construction of the building in January of 2015.

The new complex has 216 private patient rooms, with the UF Health Heart and Vascular Hospital occupying the south wing of the building that includes 120 of the total beds count. The UF Health Neuromedicine Hospital occupies the north wing of the building and includes 96 beds from the total count.

The first floor of both hospitals will have radiology, presurgery, laboratory and other support services so that patients will be able to have most of their healthcare needs met in one building. Inpatient rooms will be on the upper floors of both hospitals. In addition, the two hospitals will feature multiple hybrid operating rooms with the capability of adapting to rapidly changing medical technology.

The two hospitals combined have five general and three hybrid heart and vascular operating rooms. Of the seven neuromedicine operating rooms, two have MRI scanners attached to the room, which allow doctors to safely perform an MRI scan mid-surgery without having to transport patients to a new suite.

The new facility was built with patient comfort in mind, according to Rossana Passaniti, UF Health media relations coordinator in a recent interview with the Alligator, a local news source. Artwork by local Gainesville artists hangs on the walls of both hospitals, and a calming color scheme and warm lighting were chosen to reflect nature, according to Passaniti.

Patients from UF Health Shands Hospital in neurological and cardiological intensive-care units will be moved to the new hospitals on Dec. 10, and new patients can be seen starting on Dec. 11.
