DAVIS, Calif.—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (McCarthy), in collaboration with SmithGroup and UC Davis Health, has announced the groundbreaking of the UC Davis Health California Tower project, a transformative healthcare facility set to redefine patient care and community health in Sacramento. This 910,000 square-foot, $3.7 billion project promises to enhance health outcomes and support the socioeconomic fabric of the region.

The California Tower will feature a 14-story hospital facility and a five-story pavilion, adding 334 private patient rooms designed to improve recovery and reduce infection rates. This state-of-the-art facility, connected to the existing Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion, also includes two helicopter landing decks, advanced imaging and support services, and complex procedure rooms, ensuring comprehensive healthcare delivery for the next 50 years.

The progressive design-build project has been marked by strategic planning and strong collaboration from the start, allowing the teams to navigate the project’s duration and scope more easily. “We proactively developed a comprehensive staffing rotation strategy from the project’s inception, ensuring team well-being and continual growth,” said Bryan Anderson, Executive Vice President, Operations at McCarthy. “With such a big team working on a large healthcare project, culture is very important. We dedicated time early on focusing on our culture as a team and outlining how we want to behave, operate, communicate, and treat each other.”

UC Davis Health has a longstanding commitment to providing high-quality care, especially to underserved populations. The California Tower project is an extension of this mission, offering a robust health care safety net and addressing the region’s hospitalization needs. The project will create hundreds of construction jobs, utilize local vendors, and upon completion, provide permanent employment opportunities, thereby contributing to community wealth-building and addressing social determinants of health.

“The mission of UC Davis Health is to improve the health and well-being of our community, and the California Tower project is a significant step toward achieving that goal. This state-of-the-art facility will increase our bed capacity to provide a flexible facility to handle all levels of specialized care. The most vulnerable populations will have access to high-quality healthcare services,” said Jill Tomczyk, Executive Director of Strategic Programs at UC Davis Health.

Sustainability is also at the heart of the California Tower, with the project on track for LEED Gold certification. The building’s design includes energy-efficient systems, indoor environmental quality enhancements, water use reduction, and rainwater management strategies, all contributing to a greener, more sustainable healthcare environment.

The California Tower’s architectural design complements the existing UC Davis Medical Center campus while setting a new vision for healthcare facilities. The 230-foot tower will be a prominent feature of the local skyline, with unitized curtain wall panels mixed with metal fins, and structural glass planes enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency. This design ensures patient privacy and supports reduced energy consumption, creating a welcoming and sustainable environment.

“The California Tower synthesizes innovative medical planning, state-of-the-art building technologies and thoughtful patient and staff-centered design to meet the healthcare needs of the future,” said Chee Keong Lin, Vice President and Health Studio Leader at SmithGroup. “This transformative healthcare facility will provide a destination of healing and a vital resource for Sacramento and its surrounding northern California communities.”

The project is slated for completion in 2030.

HOUSTON—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has completed construction of two structures on the campus of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital located in the greater Houston area. The project included a six-story medical office building and an attached seven-level parking garage. McCarthy broke ground in December 2021.

McCarthy’s scope included a medical office building, totaling 160,000 square feet, while the garage consists of 1,100 spaces. Conditioned pedestrian bridges connect the new medical office building to the existing campus buildings. A vehicle bridge connects the new garage to an existing adjacent garage. For the building’s interior, McCarthy was responsible for building out the lobby, corridors, and an endoscopy surgical center. The surgical center, which will be completed in August, includes three endoscopy rooms as well as one operating room.

The project’s location within the campus also created multiple challenges, as working within an operating hospital campus meant McCarthy had to work in a confined area without disrupting sensitive hospital operations. Deliveries were timed to ensure materials were installed as soon as possible to accommodate limited laydown space. Challenges associated with the supply chain were managed to ensure materials arrived in time to prevent disrupting the project schedule.

As part of the project, McCarthy undertook a major logistical challenge of extending a water main 2,500 feet around the campus while navigating existing underground utilities. Additionally, the existing garage structure was reinforced to accommodate the new vehicle connector bridge. On the technology front, McCarthy utilized a fully BIM-coordinated MEP system, as well as using McCarthy Mapping to identify locations of underground utilities.

“With an aggressive timeline and several challenges along the way, the entire project team was unified in its commitment to serve Houston Methodist and provide a seamless experience on this complex project,” said Greg Lynch, McCarthy project director. “We always want to be good stewards of each project, and McCarthy was honored to continue our partnership with Houston Methodist as they expand in Sugar Land.”

McCarthy served as the project construction manager, with Page as the project architect and Jacobs as the Owner’s representative. With an extensive portfolio of multi-phase healthcare and research facility projects, McCarthy is ideally suited to take on healthcare and research projects of any size or complexity. Some of McCarthy’s other healthcare projects include Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital – Austin, Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler expansion, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion.

HOUSTON – January 17, 2023 – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. celebrated the topping out of Houston Methodist’s new Cypress Hospital campus located in the greater Houston area. The Houston Methodist campus sits on 105 acres and consists of a seven-story hospital, two medical office buildings, and a central utility plant, with a mixture of built out space as well as a shell for future growth. McCarthy broke ground on the hospital in February 2022, and construction is scheduled to achieve substantial completion by the end of 2024.

To celebrate the construction milestone, those involved in the project and Houston Methodist executives gathered for a barbeque lunch and remarks by various speakers. All attendees signed a symbolic construction beam that was hoisted to the top of the structure along with the traditional evergreen tree. Speakers reflected on the work accomplished safely this far and looked ahead to the work needed to complete the campus.

McCarthy’s scope includes demolition of 11 existing buildings, totaling 600,000 square feet before constructing the new hospital with capacity for 276 licensed beds. The campus consists of a 569,100-square-foot, seven-story hospital building centered around a seven-story atrium. It also includes two medical office buildings that are six stories each. The first, totaling over 162,900 square feet, contains a cancer center with linear accelerator, a breast center, infusion and pharmacy areas, and a bridge connector to the new hospital tower. The second, totaling 160,200 square feet, includes an orthopedics and sports medicine center and clinics. McCarthy is also renovating an existing 29,000-square-foot central utility plant onsite.

“Reaching this milestone in such a quick timeframe is a testament to our team’s commitment to not only deliver a project on schedule, but to showcase our skills on such a complex project involving not just construction but demolition and renovation as well,” said Preston Hodges, Senior Vice President, Houston Business Unit Leader. “McCarthy has extensive healthcare construction experience, and we’re honored to continue our work with Houston Methodist on an important center of innovation coined the hospital of the future that will serve the Cypress community and the greater Houston area.”

All structures, including the hospital and both medical office buildings, are pan-deck concrete structures, with envelopes consisting of masonry and glazing similar to Houston Methodist’s other community hospital campuses. The hospital is designed as a “hospital of the future” and will incorporate the most advanced technology available from the day the doors open.

While the construction process uses standard materials, procurement lead times, supply chain issues, and inflation have presented challenges to the project. The cement shortage Texas faced through the summer months created schedule constraints and drove teams to ensure they were ready for pour dates. McCarthy worked closely with the design team to progress the design, focusing on certain elements of the project to support the fast-paced construction. Due to the speed to market, McCarthy recommended a fast-track multi-phase GMP approach, giving them the ability to procure certain components for each structure before the design was complete. This collaborative effort has also accelerated the BIM coordination to set the team up for success moving forward.

McCarthy serves as the project construction manager at risk with Page as the project architect. Walter P. Moore is the project structural and civil engineer, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. handles mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, OJB is the landscape architect, and Vizient oversees medical equipment planning. With an extensive portfolio of multi-phase healthcare and research facility projects, McCarthy is ideally suited to take on healthcare and research projects of any size or complexity. Some of McCarthy’s other healthcare projects include Texas Children’s Hospital – Austin, Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler expansion, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion.

DAVIS, Calif.—HGA recently announced the completion of a leading-edge healthcare project—UC Davis Health’s new state-of-the-art Eye Institute designed by HGA in partnership with TEF.

The Ernest E. Tschannen Eye Institute Building is a carefully balanced integration of a partial renovation of the existing Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) with a major new addition. The resulting 78,500-square-foot building reserves a floor of clinics for general medical center use, as an expansion of the ACC, and includes 64,160 square feet of space dedicated to Eye Center operations, including physician offices and conference areas. UC Davis announcement here as well for reference.

The project was launched with a substantial gift from Ernest E. Tschannen, who had his sight restored by a clinician from the center. The endeavor was delivered under a design-build model led by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. and supported by Vanir Construction Management.

The team of designers and consultants included architect Chris Downey, who lost his sight in 2008 and has since dedicated his career to enriching the environment for the vision impaired. Downey’s insights were key to the implementation of empathic design principles, and the resulting patient-focused design for the new Eye Center offers a comfortable and intuitive experience for all.

The building provides the Eye Center’s leading vision scientists—100 percent of whom are funded by the National Eye Institute—the ability to increase capacity for clinical trials by 50 percent.

TYLER, Texas—McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has completed construction of the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute in Tyler. A Cottonwood Development project, the 85,000-square-foot research facility is located on the CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances – Tyler campus and will now provide outpatient care to surrounding communities. To celebrate the completion, CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances held a ribbon cutting & blessing ceremony for their tenant spaces, attended by CHRISTUS® leadership, local, state, and federal officials, and clergy members. McCarthy broke ground on the project in May 2021.

The Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute consists of specialized areas for Texas Oncology, Tyler’s largest oncology provider, including 34,500 square feet of clinic space for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology services. Nearly 3,000 square feet is dedicated to research facilities, including three linear accelerators for radiation therapy, 52 chemotherapy infusion stations – with six allotted to research – and four private rooms. The facility also contains a pharmacy and lab services, as well as a patient exercise area.

CHRISTUS® Health features a 7,500-square-foot advanced imaging center with 3T MRI, PET/CT, CT, X-Ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and more. An additional 10,000 square feet of clinic space supports the surgical oncology programs of Louise Herrington Cancer Center, an inpatient facility located within The Bradley-Thompson Tower on the CHRISTUS® Trinity Mother Frances – Tyler campus, providing advanced, inpatient care for complex cancer patients.

McCarthy’s work included a 620-car six-story parking garage.

“We’re thrilled to have completed such a meaningful project that will bring life-changing care to the community,” said Martin Montgomery, project superintendent for McCarthy. “This was a challenging project in multiple ways. Between the linear accelerators, multiple pieces of advanced imaging equipment from multiple vendors, and coordinating the requirements of two different healthcare providers that need to work together seamlessly to provide top-notch care, we’re excited to celebrate the opening of this facility.”

McCarthy self-performed earthwork for the Cancer Center and installed all underground MEP components for the tenant spaces ahead of schedule and before the final design was completed, despite ongoing supply chain and labor shortage challenges. This allowed McCarthy, who also self-performed concrete for the Cancer Center and the Linear Accelerator Vaults, to pour the slabs-on-grade on schedule. McCarthy had two mass concrete placements in August 2021, totaling over 2,200 CY of concrete for the Linear Accelerator vaults, which feature 6-foot-thick walls and a 6-foot-thick lid, constructed of high-density concrete. Adhering to mass concrete principles, this required the use of liquid nitrogen in the concrete mix. These vault walls were poured monolithically in a continuous pour in order not to have any joints for radiation to leak through. Faced with a construction timeline amidst soaring Texas summer temperatures, McCarthy replaced all the water in the concrete mixers with ice to bring the temperature of the concrete down below 75 degrees at point of placement.

McCarthy’s extensive portfolio of health care projects makes it ideally suited to take on health care projects of any size or complexity. In addition to the Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, some of McCarthy’s health care projects include the Parkland Moody Center for Breast Health in Dallas, CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center The Pavilion expansion in Houston, the Children’s Health Plano Campus, Specialty Center II, and the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Replacement at Fort Hood, Texas by Balfour Beatty | McCarthy joint venture.
