SAN FRANCISCO—More than 200 national, civic, business and academic leaders gathered at Parnassus Heights in late April for a standing-room-only event to break ground on UCSF Health’s new hospital of the future.

The function launched construction of the $4.3 billion, iconic UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital – a 15-story state-of-the-art facility that will aggregate some of the most complex care capacity in the country in one city block to serve San Francisco, the Bay Area and beyond for coming generations.

“The UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital is one of the most advanced hospitals being built in the country, expanding our ability to provide exceptional care for San Francisco and serve patients from around the world with complex health conditions,” said Suresh Gunasekaran, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health. “This is a huge investment that will bring people to the city and solidify San Francisco’s reputation as a destination for world-class care.”

Among the dignitaries celebrating the occasion were Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, UC President Michael V. Drake and California Speaker Emeritus and UC Regent John Perez, as well as UCSF leadership and other public and private supporters.

Opening in 2030 on Parnassus Avenue, the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital will be the eastern cornerstone of a comprehensive, 30-year plan to transform UCSF’s flagship Parnassus Heights campus and drive innovations in care delivery, discovery and health sciences education. The first decade of the plan pairs the new hospital with a research and academic building that is expected to open in 2028 on the western edge of the campus.

“This is a pivotal moment for UCSF as we break ground on a bold new vision for our historic Parnassus campus. To remain a leader in the fields of biomedical research, health sciences education and care, we are building world-class facilities to match the caliber of the people who will work in them,” said UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS. “The UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital will offer state-of-the-art facilities that will bring the latest therapies to our patients. This is where the future of health care is going to be led.”

Lead architect Herzog & de Meuron and architect-of-record HDR designed the 880,000 square-foot hospital to create an optimal healing environment that integrates seamlessly into its surroundings, bringing nature, human-centered design and innovative medical care into one healing habitat.

The hospital will incorporate the latest technologies in diagnostics, robotics and surgical procedures into complex specialty care, including neurosurgery, cardiology, transplant and emergency medicine.

SYDNEY—HDR has been appointed as the lead design firm on three healthcare projects across the public and private sectors. The work is part of the firm’s commitment to transform the patient and provider experience across Australia’s east coast.

HDR, in collaboration with DesignInc, will deliver an AU$675 million Community Hospitals Program that will provide Victorians who are not critically unwell with improved access to a broad range of walk-in hospital, community health and social care services closer to home, as well as relieve pressure on major hospitals.

HDR Director of Health in Australia Bruce Crook said the program will improve healthcare accessibility, both in-person and via telehealth services, across burgeoning regions. “This new approach to healthcare is transforming hospitals from conventionally monolithic closed systems to community-driven infrastructure that transcends the walls of the hospital,” he said.

In another major growth area, HDR has also been appointed to design the new $300 million Rouse Hill Hospital. With a focus on innovation and technology, the new hospital will meet the needs of the northwestern Sydney community and connect back into the existing HDR-designed town center, public transport and pedestrian networks.

“We will place the patient, community and staff experience at the center, all while considering how the environment will interact with the end user,” said Joe Mihaljević, HDR director of Health in NSW. “For example, the permeability of the ground floor plane will connect the activity of the new Rouse Hill Hospital with the landscape provided by the site and imbue a sense of openness, healing and connection to Country and community.”

To complete the trifecta, HDR has been appointed to design Macquarie Health Corporations’ Minchinbury Community Hospital Redevelopment in western Sydney; a privately-owned, multifunctional health and wellness facility that will provide specialist clinical and diagnostic services in a community setting. Focusing on mental health, wellness, rehabilitation, surgical and urgent care, it will act as a node for the local Minchinbury community and surrounding area — and meet the demand for hospitals of tomorrow.

“The pandemic has expedited innovations in healthcare across the globe,” said Cate Cowlishaw, HDR managing principal. “We are proud to be leveraging our global knowledge base and channeling our local expertise into innovative design solutions that deliver new models of care across our eastern seaboard.”

SPANISH FORK, Utah—The Utah-based medical provider Intermountain Healthcare has announced that its latest hospital project, the $150 million Spanish Fork Hospital, will see its opening delayed from this fall until next spring.

On a recent news release posted on the website of Intermountain Healthcare, the medical outfit said that the covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the healthcare industry in ways that were not foreseeable when the new hospital commenced construction late last year.  Furthermore, during the initial weeks of the pandemic, the numbers of patients in the Rocky Mountains region slowed as more people stayed home to avoid exposure–which, in a domino effect, caused construction and healthcare firms to reevaluate projects in design and construction.

Secondly, Intermountain Healthcare said that its new facilities will necessarily have to reconfigured to maximize proper doctor-patient separation as well as patient-patient separation.  In a statement on Intermountain’s website, Francis Gibson, administrator of the Spanish Fork Hospital, said that while even with such reconsiderations, the “original size and scope of the hospital remains the same, which will allow us to meet the needs of the fast-growing communities of southern Utah County.”

A report in the Daily Herald said that, as of December, construction was between 60 percent and 65 percent finished.  The Herald said that the majority of construction was due to be completed by October except for a maintenance building, whose buildout would likely continue on into 2021.

When the hospital facility opens next spring, it is estimated it will host upwards of 4,000 surgeries and the births of nearly 2,000 babies per year, according to the Herald, which further reported that the coronavirus pandemic will likely not affect those projections for 2021 and beyond.

The Herald found that the hospital will offer facilities for women’s health, encompassing five labor and delivery rooms as well as other rooms for C-section care, antepartum and postpartum rooms, as well as 12 emergency department rooms and suites for gastroenterology and respiratory therapy.  There will also be onsite facilities for radiology, CT and MRI scanning.

Other services to be offered at Spanish Fork Hospital will be specialized care in such subfields as orthopedics and sports medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology, psychology and counseling, neurology, urology and ENT and audiology.  Furthermore, the new hospital will have referring capabilities for larger facilities such as the nearby Utah Valley Hospital, which is located in Provo.

The Herald also reports that some of the healthcare providers at an on-site clinical facility at Spanish Fork will be part-time and others full-time.  That clinic will also provide specialty care in sports medicine and orthopedics.

HDR designed the new hospital, and Okland Construction of Tempe, Ariz., is serving as the general contractor.

ST.PETERSBURG, Fla. – HDR joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in celebrating the grand opening of their new Research and Education building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September. The building is the first new facility opened since Johns Hopkins Medicine and All Children’s merged in 2011.

In 2016, the hospital broke ground on the $95 million Research and Education Building to serve as a hub for innovation in pediatric education and research.

The architect team was led by HDR, and Skanska served as the general contractor. The building itself is designed for productivity and collaboration, and to better influence the research and education that is vital to the advancement of pediatric medicine.

The 230,102-square-foot addition to the existing complex was designed to house four key institutes combining major components of treatment, education, research and advocacy to advance treatment and prevention: the Heart Institute, Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute, Brain Protection Sciences, and the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute.

Additionally, the building was established to serve as an educational center for pediatric resident physicians and fellows, with a simulation lab for clinical teaching, opportunities to collaborate on research, and space that promotes the open exchange of knowledge findings.

It was also built to house laboratories for bench and translational research along with shared support areas and research cores to promote collaboration, as well as expanded facilities for Johns Hopkins All Children’s nationally accredited pediatric biorepository and a new state-of-the-art biomarker discovery center.

The design team focused on creating a space that would cultivate collaboration and communication among its researchers, scientists and staff.

The goal was to design an open and inviting environment full of natural light that would inspire as well as serve as a reflection of the positive medical advancements taking place at the center.

Additionally, because of the hospital’s coastal location, there was a need to meet Florida’s newly updated stringent hurricane impact resistance requirements.

To achieve these goals, HDR designed a stunning exterior curtain wall along the north end of the building. On the south side of the building, an innovative exterior wall is comprised of white panels interspersed with punched glass openings to resemble a strand of DNA – a true homage to the academic medical research center.

The interior of the building is also filled with glass wall partitions to keep the space light, airy and modern.

An innovative aspect of the building’s interior are the collaboration stairways, which extend from the third to fourth floor as well as the fifth to the sixth floor; both serve as open, light-filled classrooms where teams can come together to collaborate.

According to HDR, YKK AP’s YHC 300 OG Curtain Wall and YHC 300 SSG Curtain Wall were chosen to provide more than 42,378-square-feet of the desired combination of modern, seamless aesthetics and highly rated impact performance for the exterior curtain wall. YKK AP’s YFW 400 TUH pre-glazed windows were selected to fill more than 3,500-square-feet of punched openings on the south side of the building.

Additionally, YKK AP’s Model 50H Hurricane Impact Rated Entrances and YHS 50 Storefront system were used throughout the building.

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Research and Education Building is now home to a collaborative group of 200+ researchers and educators.

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital provides care in more than 43 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties to patients and their families throughout the west central Florida region.

AL-ASHA, Saudi Arabia – A new rehabilitation and long-term care facility is in the works from Al Moosa Medical Group as a part of the group’s mission to expand their influence across the region in an effort to address a need for focused rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals.

The design of the roughly 645,834-square-foot facility was recently unveiled by Malek Al Moosa, the CEO of Al Moosa Medical Group.

The 24-bed unit will offer an efficient and functional treatment facility, serving as a rehabilitative and long-term care oasis in the region to provide rehabilitation programs for sports injuries, bone injuries for adults and children, spinal injuries, and neural and brain injuries.

The project enables the medical group to establish a foundation for a universal model of care as well as granting the facility the ability to bend and change to meet the way particular units function, evolve, expand and contract. This new facility used virtual reality to design each major space as a means of design iteration and was designed within the virtual environment, allowing for real-time feedback.

HDR was selected as the architect; bringing together design and planning experts to create a master plan for the new facility for Al Moosa, which aims to reflect the highest level of international medical and architectural design.

The facility is designed to reduce energy consumption and preserve the surrounding environment, essentially laid out as a micro village, embracing the oasis surrounding landscape and encouraging healing through its connection to nature.

Key features include tiered green steps originating on the ground level rise to the rehab center containing the gym and pool, shading the parking below and offering healing and visual engagement for patients and staff as part of the rehabilitation regimen.

A gym and pool structure displays an expansive green roof.

An enclosed garden within the lobby, complemented by personalized gardens and rehabilitative green spaces at every inpatient floor of the bed tower, ensures access to nature, irrespective of mobility for everybody.

A shielding enclosure created by a seamless and continuous solar screen wraps both the taller inpatient bed tower as well as the lower rehab gym and pool.

A winding screen follows a rippling pattern and is designed to parametrically change from façade to façade to compensate for the solar heat gain of its specific location and function. Lastly, on the inpatient tower, the screen opens up to the multi-level hanging gardens at the corners of each triangular floor plate.

All spaces were designed to create the most positive experience for patients to minimize anxiety and stress. Patients and visitors will arrive through a five-star hotel-style lobby with abundant waiting areas and surrounding retail outlets, including a pharmacy and dining as well as a hanging garden and water features.

The double-height volume and transparent layout will allow visitors to navigate the facility with ease. Patient rooms are designed to improve the patient and visitor experience, allowing space for families and loved ones to visit and connect socially while providing views of the regional landscape.

Reports from HDR Architecture contributed to this story.

The Grand Island, Nebraska Regional Hospital has hired Larry Speicher as CEO. The former CEO of the nearby Kearney Regional Medical Center (KRMC) in Kearney, Nebraska, Speicher assumes leadership of the new four-story, 174,000-square-foot full-service community hospital currently under construction in southwest Grand Island. The new hospital is the brainchild of a consortium of local physicians and community partners who have been working to create a new hospital that focuses on the community and the healthcare needs of the region.

Speicher is no stranger to the physician-led model. He was involved in the planning, fundraising, development and construction of KRMC, also physician-led, long before it opened in 2014. Since then, the hospital and medical office space have nearly doubled its footprint to about 170,000 square feet. Speicher has been credited for keeping the medical center’s physicians informed throughout the process and for rapidly expanding its staff and facilities.

Before becoming KRMC’s CEO, Speicher was the administrator of Platte Valley Medical Group.

“I’m excited about helping these physicians build an organization that will be so valuable in the Grand Island area,” Speicher said. “This hospital will have many long-lasting positive effects on the local marketplace.”

The hospital was designed by HDR; the general contractor is Chief Industries Construction. The expected completion date is December 2019, with patients being served beginning in 2020.
