FISHERVILLE, Va. — Augusta Health in Fisherville announced plans for a $22 million expansion and renovation of its emergency department on April 26 in conjunction with a groundbreaking ceremony. This ER expansion is a long time coming with emergency room traffic having nearly doubled since its opening over 20 years ago with nearly 62,000 patients last year.

The hospital’s emergency department was originally built to serve 35,000 patients. The increase in patient traffic at the Augusta Health ER over the past 20 years has led to patients often being served in hallways or corridors during especially busy times. “The hospital is not only seeing more patients, but patients of higher acuity with trauma, strokes and heart attacks,” said Mary Mannix, Augusta Health president and chief executive officer at Augusta Health, in a recent statement.

The addition and renovation will allow the hospital to expand and grow as the community it serves does the same, according to Mannix. The current space constraints of the hospital limits its ability to accommodate and upgrade to the significant innovations in medical equipment and technology in recent years, and the intention of the hospital’s expansion is to make these upgrades possible.

The plans for the expansion include a 33,000-square-foot, two-story addition, as well as renovating the existing 17,500-square-foot facility. Completion of the project is set for 2019. The expansion will include 48 large, private rooms and dedicated areas for stroke, heart attack and other trauma cases. There will be areas for family consultation, private conversations and for meetings with doctors. Enhanced workspace for EMS, police and mental health professionals are also included in the plans for expansion. A new ambulatory entrance with a canopy will also be built, and 16,288 square feet of shelled space for future use are included in the expansion.

TYLER, Texas — The Christus Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler broke ground April 3 on an expansion of the Christus Mother Frances Hospital. This expansion is a two-part project that includes a new parking garage and a tower that will house an Emergency Care Center, Intensive Care Units and multiple support services, with additional space for future growth.

The 186,452-square-foot tower will have a skywalk leading to the 297,300-square-foot, 850-space parking garage. The combined budget for the two-part project is approximately $92.1 million. This expansion is a coordinated effort between HDR Architects, SSR Engineering and McCarthy Contractors — all based out of Dallas — and Walter P. Moore out of Houston. Construction on the parking garage began in May, projected for completion in Jan. 2018. Construction on the tower is projected to begin after the completion of the parking garage in Feb. 2018, with construction completion scheduled for fall of 2019.

The overall goal of the hospital expansion is twofold, according to Kyle Rutherford, associate vice president for construction services at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Health System. Part one is the construction of the parking garage to alleviate current parking issues for the hospital, and part two is to improve the existing Emergency Care Center (ECC) and ICU capabilities of the hospital. “The ECC will have a linear design that will include all private rooms to improve patient privacy and positively impact infection control,” said Rutherford.

Additionally, the new ECC will bring leading-edge technology, improved patient flow, air flight and ground transportation accessibility to improve wait time and length of stay.

The plans for the expansion include 48 private treatment rooms in the ECC, with dedicated pediatric-friendly rooms and a surge capacity to 52 to allow up to 90,000 visits annually. “The existing ECC was constructed to receive approximately 45,000 visits each year, and we’ve averaged more than 80,000 visits annually for some time now, making us the busiest ECC in the area,” said Rutherford.

The new tower will have six levels, with a range of services in the basement, a state-of-the-art- emergency care center on level one, a 24-bed ICU on both levels three and four, with level five yet undesignated, open for future growth needs. The expansion’s final level includes a rooftop with two helipads that will bring the medical center’s “Flight For Life” program into a new area with direct ECC access, improving accessibility to ECC care.

“The expansion will provide covered parking for all visitors, as well as an ECC that will improve throughput and decrease wait times in a private and comfortable environment, especially for our pediatric patients and their families,” said Rutherford. The ICU design will allow the clinical staff to have bedside clinical documentation, continuous patient observation and a “hospitality room” feel, according to Rutherford. “Support services will be readily available, reducing the distance staff will need to travel, minimizing time away from patients,” said Rutherford. Additionally, interior enhancements of water features, indirect lighting and other planned aesthetic improvements for the hospital were chosen to reduce stress and create a calming and healing environment for patients.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — An expansion to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto is slated to open this fall. The expansion of the 26-year-old facility has been in development since 2006, and the hospital broke ground on the expansion in September 2012.

It was previously reported that the project was slated for completion in summer 2017, however, the timeframe for completion has since been delayed by a few months. The $1.2 billion expansion will add 521,000 square feet, 3.5 acres of garden space, 149 patient beds and six operating suites, nearly doubling the size of the existing campus. Perkins+Will of Chicago and Hammel, Green and Abrahamson Architects of Minneapolis are leading the charge for the design of the expansion. DPR Construction’s Redwood City, Calif. office is serving as the general contractor.

“In our 25 years, we’ve become leaders in providing the best care for children and pregnant women. Keeping pace with the growing needs of our patients was the catalyst for this transformation,” said Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital CEO Christopher G. Dawes in an interview published in the Fall 2016 Stanford Medicine Newsletter.

This expansion will add incredible technological advances to the facility, including six new surgical suites, a nuclear medicine department, three new imaging units and four diagnostic units, including a cardiac “hybrid” angiography suite, according to a statement issued by the hospital.

Another major goal for the project is to make Lucile Packard more family friendly. Features of this plan include the construction of private patient rooms with space for families to be together during treatment and recovery, and amenities such as interactive sculptures to entertain and educate children and families. By making the hospital more family friendly, the expansion is intended to help improve the lives of patients and their families by easing the stress of a hospital stay. More than 800 physicians, nurses and parents have also supported this expansion, according to a hospital statement.

“From the beginning, the vision for expansion was not only founded in a mission to lead the way in children’s health but to nurture the whole family,” said Anne McCune, chief operating officer at Lucile Packard Hospital in the Fall 2016 Stanford Medicine newsletter. “Many of our patients require acute and chronic care, and the hospital becomes a second home for the entire family.”

Improving care at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, however, means more than just technological advances and new family-friendly attributes. Environmental sustainability is another major focus of this project. A wind turbine was installed to power the hospital, electric vehicle charging stations are now offered in the parking lot, and more than 3.5 acres of healing gardens and green space have been integrated into the project.

Additionally, rainwater harvest systems are being constructed to meet all of the irrigation needs for the property’s landscaping. The installation and use of this catchwater system will save more than 684,000 gallons of water each year, according to Robin Guenther, principal at Perkins+Will and lead designer of the hospital expansion. The hospital also installed water-efficient bathroom fixtures that will reduce water usage by 30 percent, according to a statement.

NEW ORLEANS — On Jan. 11, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the expansion of the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. The $225 million project will take place on the 17-acre former New Orleans Adolescent Hospital campus, land that LCMC Health (which manages Children’s Hospital in New Orleans) purchased for $29 million back in 2014. The New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, a psychiatric facility the state opened in 1981, closed in 2009, according to an article by NOLA.com.

The project will include a new parking garage, expanded cancer center with inpatient and outpatient services together, expanded critical care facilities and an elevated walkway connecting the new garage to the hospital. The project will also include a same-day surgery unit with private rooms, a cardiac intensive care and neonatal intensive care unit with private rooms, a cancer center and a new main entrance, reception and lobby area.

Construction on the hospital will be completed in three phases, according to a statement by Children’s Hospital. The first and last phases lasting approximately 12 to 18 months and the middle phase taking longer at 24 to 28 months, according to the statement.

“This project is a dream in the making for our physicians, employees, patients and community,” said Mary Perrin, CEO of Children’s Hospital, in a statement. “We’ve worked with our physicians and the families we serve to identify the services and amenities that will improve the delivery of and access to pediatric care.”

The Children’s Hospital currently has 247 beds and Atlanta-based Stanley, Beaman and Sears (SBS) are serving as the architecture firm on the project.

CLERMONT, Fla. — South Lake Hospital’s new emergency center celebrated its groundbreaking on Jan. 12 for the new $12 million, 30,000-square-foot facility in Clermont. South Lake Hospital, in affiliation with Orlando Health, is a not-for-profit health care organization. The new building will provide emergency and outpatient services when it opens this fall.

With the new building comes opportunity for employment. The new emergency center is expected to hire between 35 and 50 new employees, according to a statement by South Lake Hospital.

This portion of the hospital is part of a larger renovation project, which totals $50 million and incorporates other projects including an $8 million to $10 million freestanding emergency room and a 40,000-square-foot medical office building on 11 acres in the Four Corners area, plus an expansion to its main campus’ emergency department, according to the Orlando Business Journal.

The three-site expansion project was announced in early 2016. Working on the project is Charlotte, N.C.-based Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, serving as the architect firm of the satellite campuses, and Dallas-based HKS Architects is the architect firm of the main campus expansion, according to the Orlando Business Journal.

“We’re expanding our services so that patients in all areas of south Lake County have improved access points to health care,” said John Moore, president of South Lake Hospital, in a statement. “These plans are driven both by current needs and projected future needs, based on the accelerating growth of our county.”
