TOWSON, Md.—Hammes Healthcare, a leading provider of consulting and project delivery services, has celebrated the completion of the new Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building at GBMC HealthCare, which opened to patients on November 14.

Hammes served as project manager and provided operational readiness services for the new 117,000-square-foot addition to GBMC’s existing hospital. The addition includes a new main entry, three-story atrium, retail pharmacy, café, wellness and conference center, and two acute care, medical/telemetry units with a total of 60 new patient rooms.

The new Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building is one of two major capital projects Hammes is managing as part of GBMC’s Promise Project. The other is the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion, a new 70,000-square-foot cancer center that will open in early 2025. Hammes was first engaged by GBMC in June 2019 to develop the budget for the Promise Project program and facilitate the Certificate of Need (CON) process with the State of Maryland.

“I can say with certainty The Promise Project would not have finished on time and on budget without the skillful leadership of Hammes,” said Russ Sadler, GBMC Senior Director of Planning, Construction and Design. “Under their leadership, the project was completed on time, and on budget, something that was, and is, unheard of in today’s economic climate. We will be forever grateful for Hammes for not just leading but becoming part of our culture at GBMC.”

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside GBMC and our project partners over the past four years on The Promise Project,” said Nancy Connolly, President of Hammes Healthcare.  “We are so proud to see the new GBMC Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building open to patients and look forward to our continued partnership with GBMC as we work to complete the new Sandra R. Berman Pavilion.”

Hammes Healthcare is a national consulting firm that provides real estate and market strategy, facility planning, project management and development services to the healthcare industry.

GBMC’s 257 licensed bed, acute and sub-acute care hospital in Towson handles more than 23,000 admissions and more than 52,000 emergency room visits annually. With GBMC Health Partners, they have established 12 advanced primary practices throughout the region.

WINDSOR, Ont. (Canada)—Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) has selected global integrated design firm Stantec as the Planning, Design and Conformance (PDC) team for the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital, a single-site acute care facility for the growing communities’ needs. Stantec architects and engineers will support the project through the development of block schematics and indicative design phases, the tendering process, and construction.

Situated on a 60-acre site, the new acute care hospital will span 1.6 million square feet with state-of-the-art Emergency/Trauma Services, Cancer Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Regional Cardiac Services, Critical Care, Medical/Surgical Inpatient Units, Surgical Services, and Outpatient Clinics. The hospital will include increased bed capacity as well as increased capacity in Emergency Services to increase to meet patient needs into the future.

The facilities modern design will give patients and their families more privacy, comfort, and control by providing 100% inpatient patient rooms with the capacity to be private and/or isolation rooms with improved infection prevention control and a modern ventilation system. There will also be increased capacity to support WRH partners in education – including the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Windsor Program – and enhance research and clinical trials. The updated infrastructure will strengthen the ability to recruit and retain physicians, nurses and frontline health professionals and medical leaders.

“This is a significant project milestone. We are thankful for the leadership, input, and support from all who have helped move this project forward including hospital staff, professional staff, patients, their families, the community, planning experts, the government, and elected officials at all levels,” said David Musyj, President & CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital. “We now look forward to working with Stantec to continue to advance the project and ensure we are in good shape to start construction on or before the target date.”

Together with 39 user group teams – comprising hospital leadership, professional staff, and patient and community representatives – Stantec will develop design plans and performance requirements for the new hospital and oversee their adherence throughout the construction period. The firm will work with the WRH User Group Planning Teams, the Project Management Team, and Infrastructure Ontario to position Windsor Regional Hospital for the successful tendering process for a project developer in 2025 and the start of construction in 2027.

”By bringing state-of-the-art tertiary, acute, and community-based health care services to a growing patient population, we are helping establish the new hospital as the cornerstone of the region’s healthcare,” said Tim Eastwood, senior principal for Stantec. “We are honored to be part of a project that solves capacity issues and places the community needs at the center of our efforts.”

Stantec’s work on the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital will begin immediately with the study of the Campus Plan and preparation of the Stage 2B Ministry of Health submission. These early design plans will develop block diagrams, including the overall circulation flows (horizontal and vertical) for all clinical and non-clinical services. The schedule goal is to submit the Stage 2 block diagrams, together with the functional program and an early cost estimate to the Ministry of Health in early 2023 for approval to proceed with the next major phase of this project — the detailed indicative design development and preparation of output specifications.

CLEVELAND – The MetroHealth system has announced plans to create a new 11-story Acute Care Hospital on its 52-acre Cleveland campus along with national multidisciplinary design firm HGA.

The hospital is a part of MetroHealth’s forward-thinking response to confront the rapid changes in improving patient care, streamlining staff efficiencies and enhancing community partnerships. Beginning construction this year, the hospital will include private patient rooms featuring floor-to-ceiling windows as well as accommodations for overnight family visits and the flexibility to incorporate ICU capabilities.

The facility’s master plan also uncovers a “hospital in a park,” in which 25 acres of the previous surface parking will be changed into a park-like space for patients, visitors and staff to be able to receive the natural benefits of nature.

“The hospital becomes a backdrop for the landscape and a showcase of the community activities within. Every occupied space within the facility is given access to natural daylight,” said HGA Project Designer, Bryce Hubertz, AIA LEED AP. “Corridors terminate at floor-to-ceiling windows providing orientation and views to the site including long views of downtown Cleveland.”

The hospital incorporates the characteristics and distinctions of a park  –  including textures, shadows, social opportunities – which have been abstracted to form moments within the facility that are welcoming, memorable and affirming.

Hubertz explained how the facades at the patient tower reflect the always changing patterns of the sky with extruded terracotta facades, mimicking the rippling waves of Lake Erie and nearby Cuyahoga River.

“Wooden walls and detailing flow from interior spaces outward, blurring the line between indoor and out, said Hubertz. “The guiding ambition is to connect the patient directly to the benefits of the proximity of the natural environment. The overall composition is a balance of sophistication and informality, using material to evoke the familiar, with an emphasis on grounding the structure within its context and community.”

HGA medical planner, Mara Sabatini, NCIDQ, IIDA stated that the new hospital will also feature robotics to deploy supplies, medication and food to the rooms creating greater efficiency for the staff as well as better patient care.

“Along with the robotics, we have a pneumatic tubes system across all departments for waste and linens and other material transport,” said Sabatini. “HGA is working closely with our design partners Guide Studio to integrate pieces of technology-based wayfinding into the new addition as well.”

The design process of the hospital includes MetroHealth’s in-house Lean team which continues to research new operational processes and delivery methods to respond to patients’ various needs.

With HGA, the team developed a research-focused I-Team to find and address the best practices to achieve the health system’s promise to design a cost-effective, sustainable and patient-focused hospital.

Through concentrated predesign workshops, the team observed innovations in the best utilization of space in order to quickly adapt rooms to new delivery methods and processes, creating a highly flexible, neutral platform.

The outcome of this was a Process Neutral Design which emphasizes design that uses assembled rather than constructed parts, including modular and open plans, prefabricated components, demountable systems and transferable walls to establish its neutral and flexible platform for quickly responding to patient needs.

The hospital is scheduled for completion in 2022.
